  • loose output shaft/tailshaft

today i pulled my driveshaft so i could put in some new u joints, which didnt get done (no torch) and when reinstalling my driveshaft, i noticed the output shaft was moving around in there. i get a clunking noise when the car downshifts into first when coming up to a stop. could this be the culprit? is the movement normal? thanks. im supposed to be taking it to chicago saturday morning for a dyno tune and dont want this thing to leave me stranded. thanks

      i have an M6 and mine doesnt...so

however, i am very interested in knowing because my truck has always clunked quite a bit on the shifts from day one, and it doesnt seem to be anything serious... i always thought it was my transfer case but maybe not?

          I don't think it's normal.

I just pulled my trany (M-6 for a LT-1) and my ouput shaft is tight, no movement.

Might want to have it looked at.

it seemed like it moved quite a bit, didnt measure or even pay that close attention, but it did catch my attention. ill get a hold of performabuilt tomorrow and see what they say.

did you get this figured out yet? if not i can stop by and look at it thursday on my way home from work..or we can meet up right after work on alpine somewhere. what time do you get out? i drive pretty much right past your work every day about 4:15 or so...im pretty sure mine had a little bit of slack, but not a ton...i still gotta go for a ride so we can figure out what that funky feeling in the back is, what trans mount do you have? mine used to clunk all the time until i put an energy one in...

It's normal to have some slop in the trans output, even up to 1/4" total side to side. when the driveshaft slipyoke is in the back of the trans, the yoke and the output are together held in location by a bronze bushing that is pressed into the trans tailhousing.

yep thats basically what i was told, thanks. just put an energy suspension mount in, im patiently waiting for it to get "broke in" like i keep reading. i feel vibrations now more then ever, thats why i wanted to do u joints. 2nd and 3rd is pretty bad. we will see. oh and the output shaft is fine, talked to performabuilt, plus i still have a warranty if not. now im thinking i need to do a rear main seal, damn it!
