  • Driveshaft Swap?

Alright, again I come to you guys for some help.

I did the Aluminum DS swap in my '94 Camaro V6 M5. I'm not sure what the DS came out of, I think it was an LS1 A4 Z28. Anyway, I wan't to swap the driveshaft from the Camaro to the 'bird, but I don't want to have to completely refill my trans with fluid. . . Are the yokes the same? I had to use the stock yoke from the Camaro on the Al. DS when I swapped, since the one that came on the DS wouldn't work.

Are the yokes the same on both my '94 Camaro 3.4 M5 and my '93 Formula A4?

      Yeah, I don't know this for a fact, but I'm betting they're not swap-able...

That is because the v6 comes with a two piece boat anchor and the v8s come with the 1 pc driveshafts. LS1s got the aluminum ones and LT1 cars had a steel one. 99+ v6 cars came with a 1pc steel driveshaft as well.

Yes it will be the same. Direct swap.

yep. 6's have a midship bearing that bolts to the TA.
the spline count should be the same on the transmission

IIRC not all LS1's got an aluminum driveshaft.

Yeah, the old 33 lb. "boat anchor" 2 piece was a disaster. . . The carrier bearing went out, and every time I would try to drive the car, the driveshaft would just slap around the shell of what used to be the center carrier bearing.

If the spline count and everything is the same, I'll probably do the swap on Friday. I'm also working on ordering a Borla muffler to replace my aging Flowmaster. Found one for $140 shipped. Direct replacement.

On another positive note, I was able to get my gauges hooked up, well, most of them. The Oil Pressure gauge was left unhooked because I don't know where the oil pressure sender is located on my engine. As soon as I find that, it'll be hooked up too. The voltmeter, water temp, and Tach are all hooked up. I made the relays to get my alarm working with the power door looks and hatch release. Now I only have to wire up the relay to the dome lights and the starter kill, then I'll be golden. The car is coming along nicely now!

which ones do not? I am unaware of any LS1s that received a steely instead of aluminum from the factory.

The only ones I was aware of that had them were ones with the "performance axle option" like my 99 had, with the GU5 code on the door sticker. That more than likely includes special packages like Berger cars, 1LE's, etc. If it has a GU2 code on the door sticker it should be a steel driveshaft which in an automatic should also be a 2.73 gear. I could be wrong, but I'm about 95% certain. Just trying to help.

P.S. Just in case anybody is curious in automatics the GU5 code also gets you a 3.23 rear gear ratio with the aluminum driveshaft.
