  • Need Help! Rear End Problems!

Okay guys, I've run into another bothersome little snag with my '93 Formula. . . I was backing it out of a snow-covered parking space last Saturday, and the Posi went out. I think it may be something simple, like the clutches wearing out, but it's not working at all now. The car is still driveable, but it's got the one-wheel-peel going on, and that's not acceptable. It's rather displeasing at this point, as the car has trouble getting traction now, even more so than before.

Question is, how hard would it be to rebuild it and swap in some gears myself? I will be driving the Camaro while the rebuild is going on, and there's no chance of buying a 12-bolt or Ford 9" or anything, I just want to rebuild this one. It's not like I'm making impressive power or anything. . .

It would be cheaper to just buy a used 10 bolt like the one Joel had. They are for sale on ls1tech all the time. They can be had for $300-$400 most of the time which is what they want for a new posi unit itself anyways.

I've got one out of a 93 Trans Am. I bought it from Kyle last year. Its all cleaned up and painted with high temp gloss black paint. I may end up selling it, but won't know for a few more weeks. Its got 3.23 gears I think?

I'd suggest just buying a working, used, 10 bolt. To do the job properly you have to get your hands on a some special measuring tools. Plus what you spend for a new posi/gears/bearings/etc you'd get off way cheaper with used.

like others said finding a used one in good shape is your best bet.

i sold my old 10 bolt for $250 and it was just after i had it gone through again, it had new 3.73 gears in it, and an AAM dif cover. You would be best off finding a deal like i sold mine for with everything in it you want and just swap them!

Yeah, but where am I going to find anything like the one you sold. . . 3.73's are about the size gears I want, and I want to be sure that the new one is going to last me a long time. . . I don't plan on making any massive amounts of power right away, but I want something that is in good enough shape that I could throw a couple of bolt ons onto the car and not worry about grenading it. . .

My dad mentioned something about a different kind of rear end grease/oil/whatever they call it that helps the clutches that might get the posi working again until I can replace it. . . Any product like that out there? I have NO TRACTION at all, it's only the pass. side wheel that spins now, the one-tire fire thing is killing me here guys. Any ideas?

I'm going to go ahead and set my budget at $300 for a complete, working rear end. Requirements: AT LEAST a 3.42 gear, preferably a 3.73 gear though. Must have at least 75,000 miles of life left, under normal driving conditions. I don't beat on my car nearly as much as most people do. My stocker lasted me 156k, and it still works, it just needs some work to get it back to peak performance. . . Another bonus would be if the new one came with the brake parts, because I would like to put disc brakes on the Camaro, and the Formula's rear end is going to be put on the Camaro after I get it fixed. . .

Anybody know where I could find that kind of rear end? The junkyard I got all of my Camaro parts from last summer had a stock GM 3.73 rear end for sale, he wanted $350 for it though, and it's been sitting outside since then.

look for one out of an m6 car with 3.42s. It will be cheap, stronger than a 3.73 and easier to find. 3.42 is a good gear for an auto.

I just sold a nice one for $250.

Or you could just get a new posi. The thing about an auburn posi is that they are clutch style so naturally they wear out, which gives them the reputation of: Awwww burns only one tire!!

Look on Craigslist. You can find some sweet deals on there. I'll keep my eyes peeled to.

Thanks Mike! Probably should have mentioned that the car is a '93, no traction control, with ABS. Only mods so far are the Flowmaster exhaust and an aluminum DS.
