That's what I hear, just hope my tranny and 10 bolt will hold up. I can't wait to get the stall, but first I wanna make sure I beef up the suspension a lil.

your 10 bolt should be ok....but it is the weakest link in our cars.... mine blew to hell once already. but hey...just gives you an excuse to change up the gears!!!!.....or whole thing altogether....when my 3.73's blow im gonna fix it for the last time with a moser 12 bolt.1998 Camaro SS Bullseye Turbo

yeah, there is one nut on there that says the 9 inch is for M6 cars and that the 12 bolt will hold up ok for A4's. Idk, I gotta believe it'd be damn hard to break either of them. I don't like the guy either, even though he seems to know his stuff, he's a real prick about it, treats most people like they were idiots. Anyway, If I can get a deal on a 9 inch when I do it and its a better deal than I can get on a 12 bolt I probably will go with the 9, just not tell anybody there is a ford part in my car, lol.
Is my 10 bolt gonna hold up with around a 3500 stall at the roughly 350 hp I'm running? I can't afford to buy a new rear right now, or in the near future for that matter.

Well I should be running more than that after my swap and I'll let you know how it holds up. The trans had roughly 62,000 miles when I did my install and it still shifts perfect just harder
I'm hoping nothing breaks but it all will in due time just hope I can afford it then.

i think even the ten bolt would hold up to a high stall for a while. even auto's that shift really hard tend to be easier on 10 bolts than 6 speeds.-Joel

I only have about 8,000 miles on the stall right now but I'd say go ahead and do it. I'm getting some DRs and will be launching pretty hard at the track to get my best times so hopefully she'll hold up but you shouldn't have any problems.Doing less with more

What exactly is the difference in strength between a 10 bolt and a 12 bolt?Nick H.

A 12 bolt will hold probably around 600+hp easily and the stock 10 bolt is only rated for like 350rwhp or something along those lines, in other words 9">12 bolt>10 boltDoing less with more

My Monte Carlo has a 12-bolt Posi, and that engine has approx 600 hp. We might decide to upgrade to a 9" farther down the road, though. Thanks for your answer! Now I am enlightened on the subject! lolNick H.

Yeah, the 10 bolt you are talking about is the 7.5" like what every Fbody and S-10 got since like '82. They are weak. Why GM ever put those in the 4th gens I'll never understand, guess it was just to cut costs.Originally posted by DETROITMUSCLEI'm no pro and that may not be exactly correct but I know which is better.
FYI there are other 10 bolts. The late 2nd gens like my '80 Z28 had the 8.5" 10 bolt. They are almost identical to the 12 bolt design, the only big difference is the ring gear diameter is 3/8" less, if memory serves the 12 bolt has a 8.875" ring gear. Anyway, I don't know what they are rated at, but they are a hell of a lot stronger than the 7.5" 10 bolt piece of shits they put in our 3rd and 4th gens that make a hell of a lot more power than any of the late 2nd gens even dreamed about. Do you know that my '80 Z28 with a 350 was rated at a wopping 160 hp? Eye popping no? No wonder as soon as I got over 250 hp in it I blew the tranny, twice, lol.
There are also the 8.2" & 7.625" 10 bolts that were about as good as the 7.5". I believe the 8.2" went in Nova's in the 70's. Not sure about the 7.625. anyway, just some odd facts I new about. Been a long time since I had to recall this info, lol.
