  • 2-piece driveshaft?

I have a clunk in my drivetrain that sounds like a U-joint... a reputable mechanic told me that it's the joint in the middle of the 2-piece driveshaft. Is it actually a u-joint, or is it something more specialized? He also said the repair was to replace with a 1-piece driveshaft. Anybody have experience with this?

they do go out on those 2 pieces. I personally replaced mine with a one piece aluminum driveshaft.

        replacement driveshaft

Anyone have manufacturer/part# info for steel or aluminum one-piece replacements for the two-piece driveshaft? (3.8L/5-spd.)
I've read on another thread about how much fun it is to do the swap.

just get one from an ls1, there are always for sale for around $100-150 and take like 15-20 to swap. It is an easy swap.

well i don't know much about the 2-piece ones...but when i pulled my rear end and trans out...the first thing to come out was the driveshaft. i think it took me maybe 5 minutes to take out...just as easy to put back in...just slide it in and put the four bolts that hold it to the rear end yolk!

yea the 2 piece have a center bolt above the driveshaft that is kind of hard to get to, so that take a few more minutes.

                2-piece driveshaft replacement

I replaced the 2-piece driveshaft with a one-piece aftermarket (steel) unit from Shaftmasters in Lincoln Park -- http://www.shaftmasters.com/camaro

Cost a little over $200.00; Paid a nearby transmission shop $25 to swap it.

Just returned from a 1,000 mile road trip, all good. No more clunk.

good to hear no more clunk. A little pricey for a steel unit but hey it did the job.
