  • Need Ideas for CarPC

Okay, imagine you had a carPC (some of you don't need to imagine), simple question, what would you like it to be able to do?

A couple of my friends and I are trying to start an Integrated Automotive Electronics Enterprise program here at tech, where we'd be working with carPCs and integrating them into the cars infrastructure. My friend Max already has experience with writing OBDII interface software from his previous job, so we feel we have a good start.

These are a few things we've got so far for features we'd like to see.

    The usual:
    *MP3 player
    *DVD player
    *GPS navigation

    Plus:
*Door locks (kinda redundant since the buttons on the door are easier to use)
    *Windows (again, redundant)
    *Wipers
*Instead of a gauge cluster, have an LCD with customizable computer generated gauges
    *Vehicle diagnostics
*Fingerprint to start car (with key for backup?)

    Please contribute

    Thanks,
    Matt

I would want the mp3/cd with a hd to upload music into it. Plus the GPS. Other then that just a vehicle diagnostics.

I think every thing you stated would be a great idea I exp like the fingerprint idea maybe also offer dif modes foe like say I let my daughter or son drive the car I could limit the power/rpm/speed also maybe a breathe alyzer kinda good idea for parents worried about there kids drinking and driving just some ideas that you could use as add on options

For the people who like to tune their vehicle, the ability to change various settings in the vehicle such as rev limiter, timing and fuel curve, gear ratio, etc., etc., would be nice I think. I would imagine such options can be added as options also.

Game emulators! Lots of emulators! And a Wifi Internet connection so I could do this ...

          He he he!

Oh and maybe a TV tuner.

Great idea!!! We need to be doing that in our cars!

                ... or maybe not.

                I could see it now...

You cruise up to pick up your date...

"Honey you did not clean off all of the leather conditioner, now its all over me..."

                "Leather conditioner???"

                You get the point!

Remember to condition your leather at least 5 times a day! If you don't have leather act like you do!

It should have at least the features of FMIC-PC1 from http://www.icontv.com/pages/catalogPG.htm

It's pretty basic, but don't forget Bluetooth.

And here's one other thing...have an option to turn off/eliminate those damn black boxes (event recorders).

Haha, I saw "CarPC" and immediately jumped into this thread.

                      OBDII Diagnostics and Tuning
                      Digital Gauges
Rear View Mirrors -- Two cams in the back that you can switch to when you need precise backup vision
                      mp3/CD/DVD
                      Satellite Radio
                      Bluetooth
Phone Control via USB or BlueTooth
Voice Recognition [which is hard, considering Microsoft can't even get it right]
                      Game / Emulator
                      WiFi Internet
                      GPS Navigation

Those are a few of the things I had planned to do on my CarPC, but I've only accomplished:
                      mp3 playback
                      GPS Navigation
                      Wireless Internet

Well, for those who want to buy the program, I suggest installing EFILive tune/scan. It beats the hell out of having to have the laptop sitting on the passenger seat. I also suggest a backup camera display (my windows are awfully dark).

For the frontend, I use RoadRunner... it's a great program although they just released a new version which allows for plugins.. not sure how well that runs, I'm using an older version. mp3car.com would be a good place to take a look, they're all about carPCs and where I got the idea to do mine.

Check out PC104 stuff. Very robust no harddrive all flash data storage designed for industrial high vibration applications super compact. Pc104 the future of automotive computing IMO.
