  • New Sound System Install

Just like the title says, I am currently removing the interior to install some new sound system equipment. I have a small sub box with 2, 10" Polks. I am replacing the sail panel and door speakers. I have a sound ordinance 75 watt per channel 4 way amp for the 4 way duties, and a 600 watt California 2 channel for the subs. My biggest concern is where to put the amps.
I had wanted to keep the Well available for the T tops, the sub box is just behind the seats. Kinda stuck right now. So I am looking for ideas. I was thinking maybe on the back wall of the Well? Dunno.......

Amp rack. I had one years ago that mounted into the hatch

Went against the inside back panel (think behind the tail light panel)

    Very slim and low profile

S.O.B.! Mind reader... LOL Yeah, that's is kinda what I had in mind too. Looks nice. Any idea how it mounts? I may make something out of 1/2 mdf and some black cloth....

It mounts with screws. IIRC a wooden block is fastened in the back on both sides, kind of on both sides of the latch. It's been years since I had that set up. Google Camaro amp rack and you should be able to find specifics.

it is also possible to fit an amp in the spare tire well WITH a spare tire i believe.

That is also true. When I bought my Z28 there was an amp in there. Fairly tiny, and mcgyver to fit.

Yeah, if you're willing to give up the spare you can fit a lot of amp in that area and have it completely hidden. Can also do it on the driver's side in that area too although it would be more exposed. Or split the two amps up between the two if needed and likely still retain the spare.

IMO, the rear wall location opens your amps up to getting scratched from cargo and taking your t-tops in and out.

Yeah, I was looking @ the spare tire storage area yesterday too. I think I saw an old post where someone mounted their amp vertically above and forward of the spare. I like the idea but it looks to be a higher degree of mounting difficulty. Aand wiring.

I think I am going to build the rack. Looks to be the simplest way to go. Plus easy access to the amps for tweeking.

That's the route I just went with. Price wise it seems hard to beat unless you materials already on hand.

I have MDF left over from building the sub box, so I'll probably just make mine. Do me a favor and share how the manufacturer recommends to mount it would ya? I can probably figure something out but I would rather do it right the first time.

Man , is it cold out there. I need to remove the sail panels and carpet, then the door panels. I had to stop and insulate the garage door, 1 1/2 Styrofoam white. that helped. Got a little more done tonight. I am going to do the" duct insulation" sound proofing while everything else is out. The whole floor, inside of doors, and rear wheel wells/trunk area.
I am also going to do a custom headliner. I was @ Parts Galore this weekend and found nice headliner. Last year I tried to recover one in a black faux suede, the material wouldn't stretch enough to mold to the T top corners and ended up destroying the headliner base. So I recovered the original in black oem style material...yawn! If it works out Ill throw a couple pics up in here. Never thought I would ever have to go back to Jo Ann Fabrics......

Anyways, tomorrow I will get the sail panels and the carpet out. and start mocking up the amp rack. I have a couple idears rattling around between my ears on what I want this to look like. I need to get done though, she has an appointment with the body shop near the end of the month. (Rubs hands together maniacally)
