  • Firebird Monsoon + CD changer

On 4th generation Firebirds what button on the radio switches to the CD changer in the trunk? Seems simple, right? On Camaros I've seen a "CD AUX" button. My 2002 Z28 had it. But on Firebirds I've only seen a "CD PLAY" button. The 1999 radio in my Formula has the "CD PLAY" button but won't control a CD changer. Even though it has the CD changer wire harness plug in the back of the radio. What gives? I didn't think something so simple would be so confusing.

The issue is due to the backlighting scheme I cannot use a Camaro radio in the Formula as it will look totally stupid. I have to keep the red Pontiac backlighting. Any advice is appreciated.

Only late 1999 radios can control the CD changer. You have to physically open up the head unit to look for a certain part number printed on the circuit board.

Generally 97-99 CD decks cannot control the changer, 00-02 can. Add tape decks should control it. I got lucky when I bough a deck out of a 99 Camaro, paid 20 bucks just to get the charcoal face but it ended up being a late 99 model.

Thanks guys for the input. I've also read on numerous websites that there's a specific GM part number on the casing of the radio that basically tells your if it can control the CD changer or not. Your advice is appreciated.
