  • Brother's 98 Firebird Audio Install help

Hello all, I know this might be an old topic but I want the best sound system for my younger brother's money. I went shopping around today (Car Tunes and Auto sound) only to find out that they wanted way too much for something that I am confident that I can do on my own.

I already have an idea on what will be put in I just want to know for sure that I am buying the right parts before it is too late. Let me start by saying its a 1998 Firebird v6 5-speed with T-tops. Speakers are either blown and some just seem to rattle.

So what I had in mind was this:
    Kenwood Excelon KDC-X796
    HD, Bluetooth, Pandora, Itunes...
    -necessary adapters(included)
    -Steering wheel control adapter.
    -Humount mount kit

So this week order the Headunit from crutchfield, next week order speakers.
I'm confused on how to get optimal speakers as this car has the monsoon system.
Any thoughts? do I just buy speakers or do I need a separate amplifier? would it be better to have an installer do them or would it be plug in play with an adapter.

Further down the road he wants to put a sub or two in but that is another time right now I just want to get the audio up to par first.

    Thanks to all in advance.

Finally a picture of the car:

thats what I figured but I was told that the monsoon amp really messes it up. I can't figure out why i was getting $1400 quotes without subs. That really made me confused

Everything should be plug and play. I used to have a sony H/U in my car and everything worked, then I switched to a boss and it stopped working. So this summer I am rewiring everything with a new amp(s), maybe I'll even put together a stealth box.

        Used to own a Firebird.

On my old car I just bypassed the factory amp by running new speaker wire from the headunit

It's not the best way to do it, but you can also bypass the monsoon amp by looking up the wiring for it and then disconnecting the wire that goes into the amp and then reconnecting it to the wire that goes out of the amp. That's the highly simplistic version. In other words you find what two wires (in and out) are for the front left speaker, cut both from the amp, then wire them together. Then the two wires for the front right speakers, cut from amp, wire together.

Yep, just run new wire. It's pretty easy in these cars.

funny you posted that link I was just about to ask what everyone's opinion on those were. It would be nice to not have to re-wire every speaker but then again I don't want to waste time or his money on something that is possible junk. any takers? already have 1 vote for the KeeAudio CDT system
