  • need help- factory wiring for front speakers

I started to address the stero in my 98 camaro and need some help. The drivers side front is by far the loudest and best sounding speaker in the car. I had to replace the pass. side window/ door seal so i checked the speaker and found a huge mess of wire and splices. The speaker cone was in pieces so i figured that was why the drivers side sounded louder. There are 4 wires that are supposed to go to each front speaker but i dont know which goes where because they are hacked and cut. i found after taking apart the drivers side it was a 2 ohm speaker with 4 wires and 4 terminals on the factory speaker. How do i wire a pair of aftermarket speakers to the 4 wires? I have a stock cd player from a Malibu i am going to use cause really these camaros dont sound that bad for a stock system. I dont want to put more money into a aftermarket radio. The new speakers are 4 ohm and if anybody knows how i should wire please tell me now! I feel the need for speed and cant drive it untill its put back together. Anybody know where i can find a factory 2 ohm door speaker for this car? Oh and if i go to the salvage yard are there any other GM cars that had these speakers?

to wire an aftermarket speaker you need to run new wires (I would do that anyway to fix the butcher job already there)

I did remove all uneeded wiring. Now i am just looking for a stock 2 ohm, 4 wire speaker. If anybody has a extra i sure could use it. Thats the only thing keeping me from putting the car back together.

Does your car have the Monsoon? It sounds like it from the 4 wire setup. The tweeter was wired direct to the dash and the woofer was wired to the amp. Brian posted on here the wiring needed to bypass the Monsoon amp wiring and just run the speakers off the deck. With as hacked up as yours sounds who knows what they did to it. What kind of deck was in it when you got it?

When i got the car it had a Kenwood in it but either i couldnt figure out how to use it or there was something wrong with it. It has a motorized face plate on it and it only flips down halfway. I think i have the system figured out and just need a factory speaker that is 2 ohms. I could hook up a 4 ohm one but it will not sound right, like it when i got it the drivers side was much louder with the 2 ohm speaker. The pass. side had a 4 ohm speaker and the volume was very muted. Dealer wants $45 for a new speaker. might have to go that way.

Check on ls1tech there's guys selling factory speakers all the time for cheap. I've got some old factory speakers but they're not from a Camaro so I don't know if they'd work for you.

Why not make it easy and get an aftermarket speaker, even a cheap one is better than the garbage the factory used

I did buy a pair of after market speakers, and after installing one on the pass. side i found there was a major sound differance between the factory on the drivers door and the new aftermarket one on the pass. side. The stock speaker is 2 ohm so it gets more power. If i replace both fronts with 4 ohm speakers ( i dont think you can get 2 ohm aftermarket ones) the whole thing will be unbalanced which will result in have to turn the radio up louder then i would with stock speakers. I will probably pick up a speaker from the dealer tomorrow for $45 and be done with it. I dont think these Monsoon systems are all that bad anyway. To make a aftermarket system sound better it would cost much more.

Trust me...the Monsoons SUCK! They sound OK at mid level volume but at low volume you can't hear a damn thing and at loud volume so you can hear it with the T tops off and windows down it distorts like hell. I'm planning to upgrade mine when I can afford a good amp or two and new speakers and a 10" sub in the back. Probably won't happen till next year though unless I can buy the stuff this winter.

Stock speakers are paper (and rarely really 2 ohm most measure at 10 ohms or so) if you do a pair (as any speaker should be done as a pair as they change as they age)
