  • Installed: Aux-in (mp3) for stock monsoon headunit

I wanted to post this for all the people out there still using those terrible AM/FM transmitters for their mp3 players. PIE (Peripheral Interface Electronics) makes an adapter called the GM9-AUX; It uses the 9-pin socket on the back of the cd player for the 6-disc changer and tricks it into thinking you are using the disc changer. This gives you direct CD quality or better playback from your mp3. I literally could not tell the difference in sound quality from cd to mp3 player. the cd/play button is pressed to switch to aux-in.

In order to install, your stock headunit must be manufactured as a 00, 01, or 02 make. half of the 99 cd headunits work, but not all of them. really the only way to know is to try it with 99s. other makes of adapter include the PAC (which requires the disc changer to be installed) and the USA Spec (which is harder to find and more expensive). to connect your mp3 to the aux-adapter, you will need an additional cable not included. i purchased this high quality cable for cheap. A 6-FT cable is the perfect size if you run the cable down the back and under the console assembly and out through the console storage area.

There are also adapters made specifcally for Ipods, and others that will recharge it's battery while plugged in. I did not delve deep into researching these as I use a standard 3.5mm plug-in on my mp3.

more info is available here from the original source: Monsoon FAQs

Highly recommended mod to anyone that wants to keep the stock-look of the monsoon without gaudy aftermarket headunits. Literally took 5 minutes to install, only mod that hasn't given me a problem on my car. Simple even if you know nothing of electronics- just get the right cable to connect your device.

Thats cool good job. Oh and btw mp3 is no where near cd quality but good enough for most people. Even the best mp3's are streaming at 320kpbs where cd's can be anywere from 600-1500kbps

hmm this is cool. I dont understand why they wont work in 1999s though, the decks look identical?! Did you use a howto for this or anything that might have more details if mine will work or not? My car has like a factory CD changer, but I dont even have any CDs, so if I could get my samsung mp3 player to hook up to it thatd be perfect!

Yeah my camaro came with a Pioneer with an adaptor as well that converts it to the 3.5mm plug. I have pulled it and put it in my truck and use it once in a while and connect my iphone to it. I plan on getting one to connect to my Alpine HU I have in my car now. Loosely related, does anyone else have problems with the reception of their stereo? My car does as well as both of my buddies car a '99 Z28 and an '02 WS6 the T/A gets better reception but not all that great.

try the link at the bottom of the first post, but i believe the reason was that those years couldn't control the disc changer or something to that effect. if you aren't sure you could always get the input and try it (ran me about $60) or/and snag a factory headunit off ebay made 00-02 and sell your old one to be sure.

i generally listen to 320kb~+ 20MB music files and didn't notice a difference.
