  • How to remove Power antenna?

Well I just bought a 96 Formula that needs alittle TLC one of the things that does not work is the radio which I fixed but I thought the rear antenna was snapped off but it realy has a power antenna? Did these car even come with them I have never seen one on a firebird? Anyways I'm looking to replace it but I cant seem to get it off. The top of it out side the car seems to be held on by a black looking rounded nut that has 4 small cuts in it but it does not want to come lose. How the heck do I get this thing off?

They make a tool to take off that top nut, you can get it online, maybe even at AutoZone. I know I've got one, but I can't remember where my Dad bought it. Keep in mind, it is also held on by something on the inside of the 1/4 panel as well.

From what I've ever noticed, only Pontiacs did. I'm not sure if it's standard or if it was an option, but I've never seen a factory Camaro with one.

You can get a universal power antenna from e-bay and then wire it in. I'm not too sure if the wiring is already there for the power antenna or not (I'd imagine the harness is already there, in all honesty) but you'd just essentially need to tap into some sort of constant 12v and switched 12v source and then you'd be good to go.

if it's a factory antenna (which i'm sure it is) then just unbolt it from behind the spare tire and pull down. The nut on to isn't actually a nut...or atleast i don't think it is. Post up a pic and i can give you a def answer

my bird has a power antenna but havent seen many others with them. im sure it comes out from the bottom, without removing the top nut, ecspecially if the antenna is already broken.

                          1) Disconnect battery

                          2) Raise the right front corner of the car, and pull the wheel.

                          3) Remove the wheelhouse shroud. Try not to chew up the retaining pins but if you do, they are cheap to replace.

                          4) Once the shroud is out you will be able to see the antenna inside the fender. Loosen, but don't remove, the two lower fender bolts just rear of the wheel well, and all upper fender bolts.

                          5) Remove the top retaining ring of the antenna (be careful not to scratch the paint).

                          6) There are two bolts holding the antenna mechanism to a bracket inside the fender, remove them with a socket + extension. To remove the antenna mechanism you may have to slightly pull the fender away from the car, maybe 1/4" (this is why the fender bolts are loosened). A helper or a short piece of 2x4 used as a wedge is useful to hold the fender open while you remove the antenna. Disconnect the antenna wire at the base of the antenna, and the power wires at the rear of the radio, and remove the antenna from the car.

                          7) If you have a new antenna, reverse the above steps to reinstall.
