  • Newbie sound question:

I have an 84 that I have upgraded the head unit to a Kenwood KDC-MP235
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1166840602373
    replaced the stock speakers in stock locations with Infinity Reference 6x9's REF9623I http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1166234894575 & 4x6's REF6422CFP http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1166234894711
This is all I have done so far. It sounds a lot better than the old dusty stock speakers that were in it! But, it still doesn't sounds as good as I would like. The stock system in my Chevy Colorado pickup sounds richer. My new system doesn't reproduce good lows and I do like bass, not loud rattling bass, but nice smooth undistorted lows. What is my problem? Are the stock speakers in my chevy truck better than the $250 Infinities I just put in my Firebird? Any ideas where I should go with this system next? I had hoped not to have to mess with installing an amp or additional speakers much less know how, I really don't want a "big" system just something nice and rich with depth sounding. Any suggestions? Thank you! Eva

the aftermarket headunit you have wont produce enough power for the speakers, not to mention that 4x6s and 6x9s arent really low end speakers. an amp will help a lot but a sub, even a smaller one will produce the sound you crave. installing an amp and sub isnt very difficult, maybe just a little time consuming to do the job properly. if you get the stuff, id be willing to help out, but im a good hour and 15 minutes from you.

also noticing your avatar, a vert is more difficult to get the rich sound you are looking for compared to a hard top/t-top. i hate to say it but im sure you will need a sub just to fill in and get the sound you want.

4x6's in the dash suck for good sound. They're good as fill speakers but not main speakers. You'd be better off putting some 6.5" in the doors or kick panels and throwing some amps in. You can get 6x9's to bump with a good amp but it will never replace a good sub.

id throw a sub in it.
take the bass out of the speakers, crank em up for the highs
and then add a sub and a decent amp (the amp must be good... either hifonics or alpine v12 amps)

It sounds like I will be learning about amps. What abou the wiring for the current speakers, I am using what was there, stock. Should it be okay? I did notice with the vert that it almost sounds better outside the car and even better with the trunk open... Thanks Any suggestions on where or what to shop for with a simple amp to give my 6x9's some life?

the factory wiring is ok for those speakers. id look on ebay for amps because there are some good amps at decent prices. but for what you want, almost any amp, as long as it has decent power for the sub you choose, will work. best buy, abs warehouse or circuit city has many amps to choose from as well as subs. if you wanted to save the hassle, circuit city will give you a taste of bass for free. this is where they will put an enclosed sub in your trunk and tune your radio to the same station and you can see what fits you best. they do sell powered subs (amp built in) like the bazooka and such that wont be boomy but give a nice fill in like you are looking for. see link

Don't forget site sponsors either. I should be able to beat most of the prices you get. I agree get an amp, head unit amps are low powered to start with

if you find an amp that you want or are looking at send me a message, i can get any amp that is really out there. This one will actually come with a warranty, works great and the serial number will still be on it. Thats a big risk with ebay car audio.
