[quote=tenpin842]agreed! Ive sanded till my fingers bled before. And I'll do it again with my Trans Am. The final steps are always the ones that take the most time. But when you look back, you can enjoy.

i thought you had a body shop do the paintwork on your car??? ??????
i can see why people would do mechanical themselves, but bodywork is another story

Amen my third gen brother. If I can't do it right, then it doesn't get done on my car.....hence why it hasn't been repainted yet.

                sanding

you can DA the car with an 80 grit but always go back and forth and keep the da flat, do not angle it at any way, dont go up and down, go with the car, then you can da with 180 than 220 and put a good coat of primer on it then block it and spray a fine layer of color to check for high and low spots, you have to use a good primer also, you make sure you block it good to your likking..

If i ever use any air sander its to knock down the very high spots, other than that turn on your radio buy a big ol' pack of sand paper and get going. I was always told to sand on an angle with the curves of the body, as this reduces causing flat spots. Other than that just use a high build primer once you get the areas shapped out so that you have less sanding before the primer sealer. I've only got about 8 -10 cars under my belt, but i don't mind doing it because once you take a car that was un drivable, and turn it into the car you've always wanted, you have a whole new appreciation. Plus if you've ever sanded when it was 90 out , you know it's like doing an exercise program, lots of sweat.

Sanding is the worst part of bodywork/paint. I get major hand cramps from holding the block for so long. You also get a nice workout and are sore for a week or more from all the sanding. I've helped my dad paint his street rod as well as my 86 S10, parts of my Fiero, and my 98 Sonoma. Hand sanding is all we've ever done. Do what they do on all the shows on TV...hire a bunch of Mexicans to sand it for you!
