  • New Project: Recover Hardtop Headliner

Like many people, my headliner has been taking a beating for the last 3-4 years. After I got my car back on the road from my blown head gasket I noticed it was sagging more than before. So much, in fact, that every time I wear a hat the headliner is starting to hinder my head movement. Needless to say, something has to be done about it. So today I started to go about a DIY replacement. So far, the only thing I have got done is removing the old one.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of material to put on it right now. The next step is to take off the old material and scrape off any excess crap thats left over from the fabric, but that's going to be done later when it cools down some more. I was thinking of doing some kind of faux suede but I'm going to have to see what kind of materials are available.

FYI, I believe Joanne Fabric has actual headliner material. I've recovered a couple on budget projects and got some standard grey fabric that was wide enough (I think I needed like 60" wide for my old Bronco).

I used the 3M Spray adhesive and it worked great - Autozone has it for $15.99 a can. Don't cheap out and use the Permatex stuff. There's a reason it's $6.99. Use it like contact cement - spray the fabric lightly, spray the headliner backer, let them dry for a couple mins, then stick 'em together.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm trying to steer away from headliner material if I can. I kinda want to do something else that doesn't make my interior look so stock. I don't like the way the headliner material looks.
