Hey guys, I am planning on buying an SS style hood for my 96 camaro, in order to enhance the exterior appearance, and I was wondering where would be the best place to look for one. I want to buy it as cheap as possible, but I also don't want it to be so cheap that it doesn't fit, or cracks, or anything like that. Does anyone know of a certain aftermarket brand that he would recommend? And is there a certain type that should not be bought? Thanks in advance for the help.
I have a ebay aftermarket ss hood on mine that the previous owner put on, the paint is spider cracking by the latch and the hood struts have put dimples in the out side of the hood from me putting the hood down it bents and puts pressure there.
So to answer your question, if you get a ebay aftermarket one, get it painted at a nice body shop and don't use hood struts, use a prop rod.

Definitely agree with the above. Ive got an aftermarket hood and there is really only one flaw with it... that being the it doesnt align right for a few inches in one corner. The rest is perfect. But i had it painted by a professional that cared about the result and it looks pretty awesome. I have no issues with cracking or anything either, but this an LT1 hood rather than LS.
Yeah, mine will be the lt1 style also. I can't wait!!! I found one for $280 and it seems to be legit. The part brand is AIT. And I have a really good body guy at a shop called H & H auto body in Plainwell. Don't have an estimate yet, but it should be no more than 500-600 total right? Could someone else check out this brand and give me an opinion on it? Thanks
Yes, you're probably looking at ~$500 to block the hood and paint it depending on how wavy it is. Are you going to have them blend onto the fenders and bumper cover to ensure a good color match/transition? If so, you're probably over $1000 now...
OEM/real SS hood here. Fits like a glove, gaps are PERFECT, no high corners, etc.
Id say pay for the real thing.
Upfront cost blows, and its hard to find an original, but at least you know its gonna fit and youll be happy with it.
x2 all the aftermarket fiberglass hoods I have seen are VERY lumpy and on the bottom of the hood you can see all of the fiberglass strands. To me that look unfinished. (IMO Acceptable for a race car)
With some filler the hood can be made flat but if you could buy an OEM for $200 more it would be because less body work would be needed it would fit better.

Where can I get an OEM one? I would prefer to go that route, but I can't really afford to go over 700 or 800 after all is said and done; I am a broke college kid
Still skeptical of the aftermarket brands, but that may be my only route if I can't find a used one for sale and if my friend that works for GM can't find me one... I just want someone who has an aftermarket one to vouch for one of the brands. The two I'm considering are "supreme motor" and the "SLP" version. The S.M. one is 280+145 shipping and the SLP one is ~569+unknown shipping. If this is my ultimatum, then which route do I go???
OEM stuff is getting soooooo hard to find. You guys need to remember he is looking for an LT1 hood, not a LS1 hood. They made thousands more LS1 SS cars than they did LT1 SS cars.
Just how perfect do you want your car to be? I think the SLP hood would be pretty spot on as they made the original hoods.
If the SLP one is "like" the SLP hood, get the cheaper one. It all depends how perfect you want it to be.
Check out Glasstek hoods, The fit on mine is very nice. I looked for over a year for a factory hood. Prices are $900 and up and they never seem to be local so you have shipping costs.

Mine is aftermarket and the bottom is smooth and factory-appearing... except for the hole i cut for the LS1 lid
