  • Looking for some carpet dying advice

Hey Guys, I have a excellent condition tan carpet I bought a while back that I plan to dye black for my interior conversion project. I currently have two small bottles of Rit dye I bought (not sure how much I will need honestly) and have been looking up methods of dying.

Iv'e seen two methods so far which is working it in by hand over several coats or buying a crap load of dye, salt and tossing the whole shebang into a trashcan with some hotwater and leaving it alone for like two weeks.

So far the trashcan method seems to deliver better results, but I wanted to see if anyone else has done carpet dying before and had any tips.

On the flip side if someone needs a new tan carpet wants to offer me say..$100 bucks for it before I dye it, I could just put that towards ordering a new black carpet

Hey Josh, I would suggest you buy another. I you really want to try to dye it I would suggest to do it by hand. It will be a lot of work as well. You can't just trade it for different color? If it's new then just tell them you need to trade for black. Also with all the aggravation just go buy another carpet and later sell the tan one on craigslist. You might not get all your money back, but at least you can get some back.
