  • Making my own fiberglass cowl hood

I got an original factory fiberglass Z28 hood for free. So I bought a cowl scoop to put on it. the hood does have a little damage but it is repairable.

Awesome, can't wait to see your progress. Will it be a functional cowl - as in, you'll cut the hood open beneath the cowl? Or are you just going to form it into the hood for aesthetics?

It will be functional. My intake and air cleaner is to tall to fit under the stock hood. I will post more pics of progress later.

The cowl is 3 1/2 tall. It will be molded in for a seamless look.

IMG_2763.JPGIMG_2765.JPGIMG_2764.JPGIMG_2762.JPGIMG_2761.JPGMade a little progress today. I got the air cleaner hole cut and all the bolt holes drilled. Then I glued the scoop on with sikaflex 252 and bolted it down using loctite. It aint going no where. Sikaflex 252 is a polyurethane elastic sealer for bonding panels. It is sandable and paintable. I also used thin nylon washers between the hood and scoop at all the bolt holes so the sikaflex would not squirt out. I apoxied the rear corners of the hood because one was coming apart. Next glass work and Fiberglass reinforced filler.

I'm thinking of using some kind of seal around the air cleaner hole to keep hot engine air out of the scoop. Most of my air cleaner will be above the hood. It is 4" tall with a filter top.

I got some glass work done today. Covered the old hood pin holes. Then I went over the front edge of the scoop. Added some mesh on the damaged front corner and under the pin holes. Hopeing to do some filler work tomorrow.
