Painted my FRC's

Dont want to drop the money to get them pro painted so I plan on doing them myself.



Was wondering if anyone has tried the textured paint? But dont know how well it would hold up in the engine bay heat? I read that I should put some kind of heat tape on the underside of the FRCs before I install them also???? IDK if thats really needed or not.



Obviously I'm going to sand,primer,sand yada yada yada yada.


I bought some textured kyrlon fusion paint from work today along with painters tape and primer.

I did my engine cover for the imp (pretty much the same process & prob similar materials)

BEFORE (painted letters only cant find any stock unpainted pix)


AFTER

I just used colormatch spraybomb and the pen/brush one for the letter

held up ok, Id get some self etching primer and adhesion promoter if i ever did it again

Why would you get the selt etching primer if you could do it again?

I had it in my hand and put it back and got rustoleum dark grey primer.

Never used it though..

I didnt use primer on the engine cover, only ad promoter... i said self etching b/c i have like 4 cans of it here @ the house, self etching works BEST on bare metal, most new Epoxy primers "self etch" from what ive read (hopefully a body guy will chime in, this is just what Ive made sense of while researching painting the fireturd)
IMO- Any primer SHOULD work, and will work better then NO primer..

If you're really worred about the heat, VHT sells hi temp primer and tons of paint colors for the engine (block/headers etc) you could go w/ those, but if you prep it right it should last...

I said IF i ever did it again, b/c my engine is now coverless and plan on keeping it that way....

Yea not to worried about the heat, but read on tech that someone suggested it. Cant remember real season why.

for textured paint you could always use the "truck bed liner paint"
seems to be popular w/ the W body guys on their valve covers.....

My process for using non hi-temp paint on hi-temp surfaces:

First layer: hi-temp
Second layer (before first layer sets): Desired color
Third layer (again, before it sets): Hi-temp clear

Then I let it set for a while and spray on a lot of hi-temp clear. Seems to hold up fine. Essentially you're sandwiching the non hi-temp paint in between hi-temp layers, trying to get them all to adhere together.

Now the textured paint I have is a dark grey/black. The primer is about 2 shades lighter, but is a perfect color I want the lettering/ pin striping to be. Would it be a problem if I left that portion in primer and paint ghe rest as planned? Or should I just keep searching for the grey color in non primer???

Heres what I got so far. Its not as "sparkly" as in the pics. The textured paint says that in 7 days it will be chip resistant. Should I wait 7 days to hit it with clear? Or just do it now.


The lettering/pin striping will be filled it with vinyl instead of paint instead now.

That looks great, Rolo! I'd wait the 7 days - better to be patient and know the paint is fully cured than hit it with clear coat and have it not bond well.

Looks better than I thought it would, looks great! Will the vinyl adhere well to the textured paint? might want to try a test piece with some scrap vinyl?

Yup.. Was PM'ing a guy back and forth who also did textured paint just a different color. Vinyl will stick perfectly fine.. Even if it doesnt.. I will just paint them in but really want the carbon fiber text.
