Brian had a cop tell him that too when he got pulled over. The sides are illegal, however the back can be as dark as you want. That cop did not know what he is talking about. Do you know any police officers personally? If so just have them sign the ticket and mail it in, if not then you have to remove the ticket and get it signed at a police station.sigpic

You'll have to remove the sides or just pay the fine. The sides in MI have to be clear but the rear can be as dark as you want. Hell, if you wanted to you could paint the window black and its still legal.2005 Yamaha R6

Yeah when I got a ticket for tint years ago, I removed the side windows and I went and asked the police station and they said the rear could be as dark as I wanted. They just signed the ticket and I don't remember if there was a small fine or not.

Here is the actual law:
http://www.legislature.mi.gov/%28S%2...709&highlight=
MCL 257.709:
257.709 Windshields and windows; prohibitions; rearview mirrors; exceptions; windshield wipers; exemption; hot air windshield defroster or electrically heated windshield or other device; windshield washer; definitions.
Sec. 709.
(1) A person shall not drive a motor vehicle with any of the following:
(a) A sign, poster, nontransparent material, window application, reflective film, or nonreflective film upon or in the front windshield, the side windows immediately adjacent to the driver or front passenger, or the sidewings adjacent to and forward of the driver or front passenger, except that a tinted film may be used along the top edge of the windshield and the side windows or sidewings immediately adjacent to the driver or front passenger if the material does not extend more than 4 inches from the top of the windshield, or lower than the shade band, whichever is closer to the top of the windshield.
(b) A rear window or side window to the rear of the driver composed of, covered by, or treated with a material that creates a total solar reflectance of 35% or more in the visible light range, including a silver or gold reflective film.
(3) This section shall not apply to:
(b) The use of a nonreflective, smoked or tinted glass, nonreflective film, perforated window screen, or other decorative window application on the rear window or a side window to the rear of the driver.
Translation - 35% can be used on the front windshield and the front side windows provided ONLY in a 4 inch strip starting from the top of the window it is being applied to. 35% ONLY applies to the side windows behind the driver and the rear window IF AND ONLY IF you are using a reflective silver or gold tint. Otherwise, you can paint the rear sides and rear window black if you want.

I must be reading that wrong but to me it says a person shall not drive a motor vehicle with any of the following:
A rear window or side window to the rear of the driver composed of, covered by, or treated with a material that creates a total solar reflectance of 35% or more in the visible light range, including a silver or gold reflective film.
this means you CANNOT have anything darker than 35% on the windows behind the driver whether it be rear window or sides.Doing less with more

You're ignoring the second part that I posted. You can put anything you want on the back sides/window UNLESS it's gold/silver reflective film (which can only be 35%).Originally posted by DETROITMUSCLE View PostI must be reading that wrong but to me it says a person shall not drive a motor vehicle with any of the following:

I went to the police station and you guys are right the state cop that pulled me over was wrong. The back can be as dark as you want. So I got the front sides removed then had the cop sign it and I took the ticket to the other police station and there was no fine for this. But the cop also wrote me a ticket for the tinted license plate cover I had and that was not waiverable. Which means I removed it and also had to pay 85 bucks.
