  • ws6 hood repair questions...

i just bought this thing, and i think its a 'real' one (SMC vs. f'glass)
got it pretty cheap, but it needs some repairs.

anyone close to Clarkston good at this repair work?
what would be best to use to repair/fill? (I found 3M 5883 to sound nice)

NEED TO FIND a painter too! I work in Warren, so anywhere here/home/in between. looking for a good deal, but no maacos!

What kind of material is it?

not certain of material. looking on ls1tech, i think its a legit OE ws6 hood, which would mean SMC. But if I look at the spot that the support frame is separating from the upper panel, i do see some fibers in the frame.(4th pic down from top)

can an SMC hood panel have fiberglass support frame?

I don't think the earlier WS6 hoods had scoops that big and they were set back further but I dunno.

        Bondoglass?

        Used to own a Firebird.

That's an aftermarket hood. Probably from these people...

The factory hoods all had the twin scoops and they were farther back on the hood as mentioned.
That's a nice looking hood either way. Nice find.

SMC is a type of fiberglass system. More resistant to warping and stuff. When I got my hood it looked exactly the same.

yeah, still not sure of its origin... was hoping someone would comment about the letters/numbers on it.
i don't think its a trufiber, since there are no grills and trufibers website says they are integral.

I bought a damaged ss hood a year ago, and i ground out the cracks with a die grinder and then mixed up some resin and filled in the ground out areas with resin, then finished it off with bondo. it helps to re-create that original strength it had as a whole piece when you use resin, because it will make an excellent bond to the exposed fibers. Good luck man.
