  • Bubbling Paint How do I fix this??

I posted up on LS1tech but not to many reply's and they just said replace it. SO... guys a little background first. I bought this car in the spring of 08 and it had a raised bubble on the back bumper, where the paint was coming off. Not a big deal, it wasn't huge and there were no cracks. While a year and a half later it has turned to some pretty good bubbling.

I got a quote to do it and they said 500 for the whole bumper which is a bit out of my range. I was wondering how i can fix this. I'm not look for show quality but damn anything is better then this, I won't be doing the whole bumper just doing a patch job cause down the road (2 years) everything is getting painted

So i'm wondering what steps i need to take to fix this problem. I know i need to peel/pick away the bubble. I was thinking of going to NAPA to get the primer and paint. But i'm not sure what exactly to get?? I'm a decent painter and very patient, but i am a newb. Just not sure how to go about this.

    Please help

Or you guys know a painter that can do it cheaper i'd consider that too.

    Thanks

That guy brain and his dad used to paint his whole car would probably paint the whole bumper for cheap... I am sure Brian might chime in.

You have to wetsand everything until the edges from where you pick off the bubble are completely smooth, then alternate between filler primer and fine sanding until the spot's filled in, then you can spray your paint. I would recommend painting the black first then wetsanding to try to blend it in to your black, and then clearcoating once it's blended. I accidentally did clearcoat before wetsanding my color so it's a defined line between the mismatch but it looks great for spraypaint.

If you use spraypaint you'll have to lay down about 10 layers of clear giving it PLENTY of time between coats, then wait like a month for it to harden and then cut/buff it.

I saw your car in front of FLITE again last night. Lookin' good.

I'd give Bill's Barn a call. He will be able to do it for cheap and it will look real good.

I'm betting that bumper was repainted before and the surface wasn't clean so it bubbled.

hey fbomb where did you get your paint from?

I was looking at duplicolor and they seem to have just jet black and then they have a metallic clear. Would that be right? Then spray a clear coat over all that?? I'm a bit confused as far as that goes. I got the filler primer part just not the paint scheme. Also, the number of coats with the black? Does it really matter as far as that goes?

                        Thanks

By the way fbomb saw your car over by granger this afternoon. Looked good, a suggestion would be to get WHEELS!! They do wonders lol

I'm pretty sure that duplicolor makes one of the small cans of black for GM, I'm also pretty sure that the number of it is dsgm1. My paint was duplicolor from O'Reilly's. The paint itself should be the entire color and the clear should be absolutely clear with no metallic flake in it. Personally I'd put like 3-5 coats of the black on, then wetsand the black once it cures to a 1000 grit, then a lot of coats of clear over that, then wait until that cures, then the cut/buff. The more coats of black you put on it, the more you'll have to work with when you're trying to blend it in by wetsanding, you can work the edges in with 2000 grit and the transition should be pretty smooth.

I'd like wheels but I don't like the price...maybe if I could get a set like super cheap then I'd go for it but other than that I'm saving up for go-fast goodies because a giant rumbling cam will be more attractive(and people probably won't try stealing my cam). I've been thinking about getting HPtuners as a christmas present to myself because I eventually want to learn it.

I might also put my car out in the quad this thursday for the HPMSO promotion but I'm afraid of someone keying it or something so I probably won't.

Alright sweet thanks for the info SO FAST. Man this is going to be a fun Friday at home, workin on the car.

What is this car out on the quad you speak of?? you should do it and I want in lol.

Ya you got a point with go fast parts can't go wrong there. But when you have a bent wheel and need new tires, new wheels are the way to go .... I'd love to get a tuner program that would be SWEET!!

Sometime in the next two weeks the HPMSO RSO is putting a few cars out in the quad to advertise, they're going to park them somewhere on the sidewalk, probably around the emblem in the circle...
But they'll have someone watching them constantly so I'll probably get in. We have meetings on mondays @8 in the automotive building room #102. It'd be cool to have another F-body there, so far I've been the only car with a V8 under its hood...our car show was like 20dsm's a mustang, an 88 corvette, and me
