  • Fixed the clear on my rear quarter!

I found a near-match paint at work...and got some cans of clear along with it. My car had a nice patch of clear missing when I bought it, then later on I patched it but it kept on peeling all around the patch. Yesterday I decided to take off the clear and re-spray it. I hope I got all of it off but not likely. Here's the pics.

It looked like this, but worse. You know what clear looks like when it bubbles in a lot of places, kinda flaking off?

Sanded off with 400 grit, wet.

Painted and cleared! Wetsanding and polishing probably Thursday...

just curious, why didnt you do the entire quarter panel? going to be a lot harder to blend the way you did it i would think. looks like you did a good job though.

Nice job !!...but I never liked to use newspapers to mask off because of the little holes in the paper.Especially if your painting a different color...... Just my 3 cents...

what he said, I just painted my girlfriends grand am yesterday to stop some rust she had on her quarter panel. Her car is super beat up so I didn't bother doing the whole quarter panel, but when I got done and removed the tape I don't imagine how anyone could get it to blend that great unless the paint is EXACT, with how big of an area you painted I would have just done a little more and finished off the whole quarter panel. The painting you did looks awesome, just seems like sanding and blending it is going to be real tough.

You're not going to be happy with what it looks like when you get it done, I can guarantee that. You cannot 'rattle can' paint a vehicle and have it come out well. It's just not possible. When I got my Formula, it had a nice scratch down the drivers door from something and I simply bit the bullet and paid $200 to have to professionally repainted. It looks great and you would never know that anything was done. A rear quarter shouldn't cost more than $200 to have done. Why buy a nice car and then cut corners on making it look good?

I taped off about 4" from the line I was actually painting from...in other words about 3" from the tape line is dry spray/overspray that was unsanded and whatever is on there shouldn't be so hard to take off. I'll see what I can do to blend it as best as I can.

As for not getting a professional job...$200? I make that in a week if I'm lucky and I really need to save some of my money right now. The thing is I don't care too much that it looks perfect but just that it looks good. As long as the paint doesn't come off and the metal doesn't rust it's fine for now. I plan on paint in about five years from now anyways and in between then I'll be doing smaller performance things. The big thing is though, I'm about to leave to go to college for 4 years year-round. It won't be perfect until I actually have a career to support my project.

that isnt quite true. with proper prep and application, spray paint can look just fine. And by that i mean proper primering, wet sanding, and polishing between coats. Ive seen some damn nice rattle can work before - the results are congruent with the effort put forth.

No shame in that!! I am the same way with my Camaro. If it looks good from 30 feet....goal accomplished. Ive got a year of school left, then the real fun can start. At least you have an LS1

It looks good, but I'm interested to see the final outcome.

That's not true at all. Rattle can paint jobs are entirely easy to achieve a professional look - it's all in the prep and process. Paint is paint, no matter what it gets sprayed out of. With the rattle can you're just going to have more wet sanding and polishing to do.

There's a guy on CZ28.com that posted pictures of his car from all different angles and you couldn't even tell the one panel he rattle canned. He updated it a few years later with pics and it still looked damn good.

My method was a 400 grit wetsand to prep and then about a can or so of clear over the color layer (a big can)...and now I have plenty to wetsand it to a glasslike finish. By the way it's my summertime daily driver so there's no way I could ever keep it perfect.

I just decided last night that I'm going to wait until I'm done with college in like 4 years then buy a new block and stroke it with a forged bottom end and pistons, AFR 72cc heads and then get a rearmount. That's right.

Oh yeah and our turkey kept jumping up on it and crapping on it. There's plenty of new scratches but I took care of him this morning. Hope he doesn't come back.
