  • Any Auto Body Pros Out There?

I just took a look outside and for S&Gs, thought I'd check out any salt damage. Seems I have a spot about 2 inches in diameter on the passenger rear quarter that has lost a chip of paint already. I'm hoping maybe someone knows of someone or a location that can do a quick turn around/fix for the problem. Currently I'll be soaking it daily with WD-40 (not sure it will help, but it may slow the progress a little).

Needless to say, I am not good at body work and hope there may be someone that is. Thanks for any help. I appreciate it.

If you want to prevent it from rusting further, sand it down, primer it, and spray some spray paint over the damaged area. Wouldn't take much to do that, and it will give you some extra time to find someplace to get it done. To be honest with you though, it's going to be more expensive to get the paint matched up than to get the rust repaired.

Check with Pace on here, he does work like that. Maybe you can work something out with him.

Even then, though, that's not always 100%. My dad's caddy had a rust spot on the hood and we sanded it down real good then painted it and it bubbled through within a month or two.

yea, chances are the issue is internal as well as external. so sanding it down and painting it really isnt any better than spraying WD40 or grease on it. might require a patch panel to fix correctly.

exactly... it prolly started from the inside and is now working its way out.. and it prolly won;t be too cheap to get it fixed

Llllllotttt of F words coming to mind. I'll make some calls around and see. It wouldn't be bad if it were just that spot, but I can see the bubbles in about 2 inches around it. DAMN!! Yeah, I understand that '96 black actually has some blue in it and getting that to match correctly...oops, another F word. Man, if only I could still drink.

ppg does make a spray solvent that will take surface rust right off, but i have no idea what it would do to your paint. Other than that if your looking to get rid of the rust your probaballly going to have to sand a bigger area than just the spot you see, then prime it primer will last through a winter just if you go to paint it in the summer than sand it off and re-prime. I would probabaly go patch pannel though just because it's a relatively flat area and could be easily made.

The spot is actually bigger than the pic shows. It extends down to the bottom of the quarter panel, under the paint bubbles for about 3 inches. Crappy thing is, that is the new patch panel as of May. I'm having the guy that did it do it again. For now, I just smeared some Slick50 grease on the rust that's showing and hoping for the best till it gets warmer. What a PIA!!!!!

if you were closer I'd say to let my brother in law take a look at it. He can give you a real cost on getting it done.
Rolando, you can bring your car by....your only in Saginaw.

Hes pretty straight up about things like that. Plus they blend the paint really well just incase the color is off a little.

Try a rust converter (I think you can buy it at any parts store). You apply it with a brush and it turns the rust black. I use it on my winter beaters and it holds up for well for years. It doesn't look very good but it would stop the rust until you are ready to get it fixed.

Well to fix it right your looking $300-$350.

That's cutting and welding in a patch. Then painting and blending it into the quarter panel.

You can try to stop it for a cheaper price...but like most said, there is probably rust on the back side.

This way if you chop it off...your doing it the right way.
