Anybody here have any experience with clear powder coat over highly polished aluminum? I've heard if it's done right it looks pretty good. Anybody have a pc hook-up?

Yep...both my sets of wheels have been cleared over the bare aluminum...

Sounds like an awesome idea to do to polished aluminum and what not. Polish some engine bay stuff and then get them powdercoated clear.

Thats the plan! With the energy invested in polishing aluminum I think this is a great idea. There is a guy on FirebirdV6.com offering powdercoating at a reasonable price and he seems to get some good looking results. He would probably know the answer. It might be worth looking into.

I was talking about a mirror quality finely polished aluminum surface, not a hand buffed or freshly machined surface. Aluminum looks just like a mirror when it's polished right, I was curious as to if you were to clear powdercoat over that if it would change the appearance.

Just make sure you use a good quality PC...I've heard of some of the off brands leaving a yellowish tint when the process is completed...

And personally I'd avoid trying to PC anything that gets too near extreme heat sources...over time that can turn yellowish too...think of what happens to high polished headers...

Thanks Jeff......this would be a low heat application. I'm looking at options for my wheels. After having these for a few years, I am getting tired of polishing a couple times every year. Bonspeed (the maker of the wheels) now offers a clear powdercoat option for their wheels......I just don't want to send these back to California to be coated. I sent them an email inquiring about the clear powdercoat process but have yet to hear back from them.

Yes, it does make cleaning and detailing infinitely easier...

Just have to make sure that the powder coat is a quality one or like Jeff said they can end up having a yellow look to them.

The only down side is if you get a chip in it you can get dirt caught behind it.

Finally heard back from Bonspeed wheels about having my wheels done.....

"We do offer a clear powder coat for the wheels, it is $100 per wheel. Your wheels would need to be shipped
back and polished before coating this is an additional $80 per wheel for polishing."

Still cheaper than having them chrome plated though

                            That's robbery.

                            The place that did mine:

                            - media blast each wheel
                            - powder coat gm color
                            - machine back bare aluminum areas
                            - powder coat clear over the entire wheel

                            for $125 each.

I'm with Sean...time to find another source...
