Just did this a while ago on the 89, so it should be similar but may not be exact.

Assuming you have an automatic, you'll start by pulling the shifter knob off.

Put the key in the ignition and turn it to the ACC setting (not start). Pull the shifter all the way back to low. On the very front of the shifter, you should see a slot. In that slot is a retainer pin. With a set of needle nose pliers, or gently using a screwdriver, pull that pin out.

Now the shifter knob will come straight off.

Next there should be 3 or 4 screws that mount it to the floor...pull those out.

Now it should be pretty loosely sitting there. You'll have to be a bit of a contortionist and move the shifter and e-brake around, but it will come out.

This was the first time I had attempted this, and it took me about 45 minutes to get out.

      exactly what jeff said.

On my car i have CRANK the e-brake up to the point it feels like im gonna snap the cable... and it will barely wiggle out past the handle at that point. I try to avoid removing the console as much as possible for this reason, but ive done it at least 5 times now.

Also be careful when sliding the console over the ebrake handle because the plastic edges of the opening are sharp and capable of messing up the leather on the ebrake handle (learned this the hard way the first time i did it).

i just took out the Center console out of my 96 t/a .. didn't have to remove the seats.. just crank the E brake as far as you can. take out the screws and lift up on the back and as you lift pull to the rear..

i guess you can also take the seats out and just spin it with the gear selector all the way to the rear?

I bought my carpet from stockinteriors.com and they had black carpet too... I was really happy with the final product. Only down part is you have to cut the excess carpet out yourself.
