LED Replacement for Dash Bulbs

Okay so at work I have access to many different types of bulbs, and LEDs so what I was wonderng has anyone already done this?

I did see a write-up once from someone who did it to their Camaro. . . I didn't really look into it much, since there is a red filter that prevents me from doing it to my car. . . lol

im actully changing all my to blue to match the cobolt blue gauges i have in it right now

I changed all of the lights in my AutoMeter gauges to Red to match the stock ones. . . lol You sir, have good taste!

I bought the lights and did it to my car and didn't notice any difference at all. I was told there is some kind of film or something in there that keeps the red from coming through.

Do you mean in the gauge cluster or all over the dash? The gauge cluster's lights are all the same from what I remember.

yes, all lights. gauge cluster and the rest as well. should have them all the same. will look better i think.

The rest *could* be, but you probably won't really know until you pull the part out to check. I've replaced the lights with LEDs in the gauge cluster (93-02), map lights (93-02), dome lights (93-02), rear defrost switch (93-96), door panels (93-02), and shifter plate light (93-02). The ones (atleast from what I can think of in my head) that remain would be the HVAC and fog light switch. ...I think that's it?

Gauge cluster lights are all the same, I used wedge LED bulbs that had the socket attached already.

Rear defrost if you open up the housing for the switch it's a light that you can replace with a regular LED if I remember correctly.

Map lights are cylindrical bulbs that remind me of fuses. They have LED bulbs that will fit in there, but I personally just used a wooden dowel that I had sitting around that was the right thickness and cut it to the size of the cylindrical bulb, wrapped the LED around the dowel [including resistor] and then shoved it into the map lights. Worked perfectly.

Dome lights I used regular LEDs with resistors and soldered across the connection contacts that the bulb usually is in.

Door panels I used regular LEDs with resistors, soldered the wires to the LED and resistor. On the door panel, the bulb goes to a clear piece of plastic which then guides the light to a small little slit. I actually just removed the clear plastic and used a drill to make just the right size hole that the LED slides into the hole but the little rim that goes around the bottom edge of the LED is too big for the LED to slide all the way through. It sits in there perfectly. Not flush, but I think it's perfect IMHO.







**** Edit: I entered the year range for what my mod applies to. Most of the things are applicable to all 4th gen fbodies, but the 93-96 rear defrost switch is entirely different than the 97+.

Thanks guys for all your info. I went to one of the sites you give me The Vault And they sell the complete kits for the Camaro and Firebirds.
Now i have to find the white face gauge cluster and bezel.

just buy wedge type leds and take apart the gauge cluster and pull the filament ones out and put led bulbs in. you need 5-6 leds for the gauge cluster itself.
