Calling all body guys/painters.

Since I took the ground effects off the the car, (98 z28)
The rocker panels have ten or so holes in them from the brackets that were riveted on.

Whats the best way to fill these holes?

I was thinking about getting a quote from the local body shop, but I might be able to do it myself? I know a guy that paints pretty well. I'd let him shoot the rockers.

You're gonna weld the holes in the rockers and plastic weld the holes in the bumpers/fenders.

Im pretty sure our rockers our metal the the correct way to fill these in would be to grind down the area and plug weld the in with a mig welder and place a flattened copper tube behind it while welding. U could aslo fill them in with mud but that wont hold in those holes for no more then 5 years id say. To have a body guy fill those in for u i would guess another a couple hundred but im not to sure.

Not worried about the holes in the bumpers so much.
Plastic doesn't rust ....

I was told its gonna be a hard job to weld the holes in the rockers up without having the metal warping to snot.

Yes, the rockers a metal, along with the rear fenders and hood...
Everything else is plastic or fiberglass....

I dont think its possible to get a copper tube behind it.

Don't want to do it twice. (Want to do a professional job the first time)


All though, I would go that route if other had good luck / long lasting results.

I'm not by any means a body guy, so i wouldn't mind hearing all points from all sides... that's why I posted this topic... I need advise, real life experiences, options, opinions, etc.

Measure the holes. Prep the metal using a grinder. Cut metalin the proper size. Place and then weld. Grind down a bit, Evercoat, sand, sand, evercoat, sand, prime, paint. Follow this walkthrough...

You really need those holes welded up nice, Some grinding, than smoth them with filler, But need to use some good stuff like evercoat or iceing, 3m, Its not a bad job, i have replace a rocker on a fourth gen, NO BIGGY, You just need to take your time, and try to get the weld and the peice of metal as smoth as you can with the exsiting rocker, If i had a Tig, I woudnt evan need filler...

So TIG is the best welder to use on this project?

TIG is best because it has the lowest heat affected zone while welding, which allows for low warping especially in body pannels where mig has to much heat and can warp the metal. You can do it by doing numerous spot welds but tig would be the best bet.
