  • Body work

Well my car is starting to get rust on it. I want to take care of it before it gets bad and holey. I've only done body work 1 in the past that car was pretty bad. I used a right angle grinder with a body work disk pack from Autozone for the sanding. I don't have the power tool anymore and the spots are pretty small for the most part. So what grade sand paper would be the best and what would be the best way to apply the primer? rattle car or brush? Also how should I go about painting? Never painted a car before and never used clear coat before. Like I said this spots are pretty small for the most part so this should be a pretty cheap repair I hope. Thanks in advance!

I would start with 80 grit sand paper and get it all down to bare metal.
Then primer it and go from there.

Finally got the pics. Been busy or too cold lately. Bird is dirty but can still see the rust.

I know, but kinda hard with no money. I need the cheapest way to stop it from rusting. Not sure if I should sand it down and primer it, or try that paint that converts rust to primer.

If you're doing it on the cheap, sand it down as best you can and buy some rust converter. It doesn't convert it to primer, it converts it to black iron oxide to keep it from rusting further. Then you'd need to primer over that, then paint/clear it. I'm not sure how you intend to do this on your own without any spray equipment. Duplicolor has their new paint system that doesn't require any mixing and can be applied directly from the can. I have no idea how good it is, but it's intended for do it yourselfers without any paint experience. Don't just leave it in primer, primer doesn't block moisture and will allow it through and it will continue to rust. On the underside you're going to want to clean that and use the rust convertor and some paint over rust type coating to keep it from rusting more.

I didn't plan on painting it right now. Just want to stop the rust, didn't know I couldn't just keep it primer. Would primer and clear coat be ok?

Just get some single stage paint then if you're not planning on painting the whole car and at least spot it in. I've never cleared over primer and I don't think it's recommended.
