  • Z-28 or SS clone?

I am attampting to buy a 4th gen SS Camaro. How can a person tell if a car is a true SS? I am suspicious that some people are taking Z-28's, buying some aftermarket SLP items, and claiming it's a SS. I attempted to research VIN's but I am not sure the VIN tells you if it's a real SS? Maybe I am missing something obvious? Can you direct me to any reference material? I've been primarily looking at 2000 - 2002 cars.

    Thanks in advance!

True SS's have a WU8 RPO code instead of Z28

Yup, just look at the RPO code sticker on the door jamb. That'll tell you, that is unless the seller changed the sticker.

Also look for Y2Y code for SLP 2nd sticker content. Not all SS will have Y2Y or SLP additional content. There will be a sticker on the drivers door with SLP and on the passenger door there is another sticker listing the SLP options.

Just buy the Kaytech car. That way you will have a SS and it will be faster then most SS Camaro's

Now it's all making sense! Sounds like I need to see pictures of the SLP and RPO stickers before I travel and distance to look at a car.

E-bay and other web-sites are good places to shop, but I am not sure I could ever buy something worth several thousand $$$$$ without kicking the tires, "and" looking at the door stickers.

Meissen - thanks for the info on the Katech car. Holy Cow!! I enjoyed the video's

I agree with Nascarnate326, I should buy this car. The only problem is that my wife would kick me out and I would have to sleep in the car. Boy, I'll really miss my wife.......

Thanks everyone for the info on RPO and SLP tags. It's nice to have a place to ask questions. I have enjoyed MiFbody, I think I made the right decision joining.

Actually its going to have both Z28 and the WU8 codes. It had to be a Z28 to become a SS.
Depends on the year, as to how different the SS is from the Z28.
1 example - 98-99 SS's got the 1LE suspension minus the Koni D/A shocks, later years the Z28 and SS's had the same suspension. SLP did offer the 1LE as a option in 01-02.
