CAMARO REVIVAL: Auto buffs, GM celebrate news of the beloved car's '09 comeback

      August 11, 2006
      BY JOE GUY COLLIER
      FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER
Gib Loudon said he was brought to tears when he saw the Camaro concept car at the North American International Auto Show in January.

The 47-year-old Millington man who owns 19 Camaros was thrilled Thursday as he heard General Motors Corp. executives announce in Warren that the Camaro, canceled in 2002, would be back by the first quarter of 2009.

"It's a passion," said Loudon, who bought his first Camaro as a high school student in 1977. "It's been something that's overwhelmed my life."

His wife, Tammy Loudon, said they'll be among the first to buy a new Camaro.

"He can't wait to pass his first Mustang in one," she said.

Speculation about the Camaro, a former rival of the Ford Mustang, had been swirling since GM unveiled the concept car in January.

The official green light was announced Thursday by GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner in Traverse City, where he's participating in a set of auto industry briefings. An event also was held at the GM Tech Center in Warren before a crowd of GM employees and Camaro enthusiasts, including the Loudons.

The Camaro revives a two-door muscle car that ran from 1966 to 2002. The new Camaro will offer both a V6 and V8 engine, putting it in direct competition with the Ford Mustang. The Chrysler Group also is reviving its own muscle car, the Dodge Challenger, for 2008.

GM officials would not provide pricing information, but the Camaro will carry the Chevy philosophy of providing the best value in its segment, said Chevy general manager Ed Peper.

The new Camaro should hit what GM sees as a growing segment for affordable sports cars, Peper said. He expects the Camaro to appeal to both baby boomers who remember the original Camaro and young buyers who weren't around for the muscle-car era of the 1960s and '70s.
"This is one of our proudest days in Chevrolet and GM's history," Peper told the crowd in Warren. "We're once again going to build the muscle car that dominated the streets of America and the hearts of faithful enthusiasts everywhere."

                          Camaro will hit streets again

By Sharon Silke Carty, USA TODAY
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — It took eight months to publicly reach a decision, but General Motors (GM) finally announced Thursday that it will build the Chevrolet Camaro, a retro-design muscle car that grabbed headlines at the Detroit auto show in January.
The move is an attempt to continue strengthening GM's product lineup, one of the key points in the ailing automaker's restructuring plan. GM is struggling to regain its footing in North America, its most important market, to help turn around the business.
                          PHOTO GALLERY: Cars with Muscle
GM lost $85 million in North America during the second quarter, which may seem like a huge number but is $1.1 billion better than a year earlier.
The Camaro won't go on sale until the first quarter of 2009.
It will use a rear-wheel-drive chassis being developed in Australia for use by GM's Holden brand headquartered there. A V-6 and a V-8 engine will be offered. The car will use a modern independent rear suspension instead of the bumpy-riding, tricky-handling solid-axle design of the original.
The new car is meant to be a "modern interpretation of the 1969 model, considered by many to be the best design of the car's first generation," said Ed Welburn, GM's global vice president of design.
The car won't likely be built in Australia, but Wagoner said buyers won't care where it's built.
The original Camaro was introduced as a 1967 model, Chevy's rival to the Ford (F) Mustang. It was discontinued after the 2002 model, after about 4.8 million were sold.
Consumers and the auto press were gaga over the Camaro concept, which rolled through the North American International Auto Show in January serenaded by a percussion marching band. At the time, CEO Rick Wagoner wouldn't commit to building the car, but he told 60 Minutes that if the company didn't decide in favor of the car, it might be "brain dead."
"As evidence that we're not completely brain dead, it's my pleasure to announce that GM will build the Chevy Camaro," Wagoner said at the industry's annual Management Briefing Seminars here.
While industry experts applaud the decision as evidence the automaker is listening to its consumers, GM still faces the challenge of getting products on the market faster than its competition. The Camaro will hit the market three years after its unveiling in Detroit. The Dodge (DCX) Challenger, another retro-style muscle car, also was introduced at the Detroit show and is due in showrooms in 2008. Challenger uses a chassis already in production, shortening development time.
Camaro buyers will be "enthusiasts, the people who had one when they were younger," said Kevin Reale, an analyst for AMR Research.
Market preferences are changing faster than many auto executives predicted. Fuel efficiency now is one of the top three buyer concerns, and if that trend continues it could hurt muscle car sales. "It's a cautionary tale," said Rob Trezenga, senior director of transportation for market researcher Iconoculture. "If you launch a car two to three years from now, will that still be resonating with consumers?"

WARREN -- The official announcement that General Motors Corp. is bringing back the Camaro came Thursday morning in Traverse City, where Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in the auto industry.
But the party really revved up a short time later outside GM's Warren tech center. A crowd of about 7,000 GM employees and Camaro enthusiasts gathered on a grassy hill, where dozens of the classic muscle cars were parked near a makeshift stage.
Well-worn rock songs from the Camaro generation, including Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" and The Steve Miller Band's "Jungle Love," blared from a sound system.
Then, in a recreation of its debut at Cobo Center in Detroit during the North American International Auto Show in January, a silver Camaro concept car rolled down a long, cordoned-off path to park center stage, as a trio of GM executives began extolling its virtues.
"We're once again going to build the muscle car that dominated the streets of America and captured the hearts of automotive enthusiasts everywhere," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet's general manager.
Peper, who called the new Camaro a "shot in the arm" for GM dealers, the company and customers, said the updated muscle car will not be a niche vehicle, but a mainstream entry within reach of budget-conscious buyers designed to appeal to men and women, young and old. GM has not released specific pricing.
The original Camaro debuted in 1967 to take on Ford's mighty Mustang. Nearly 3.8 million were built before production ended in 2002. GM may build 100,000 of the new Camaros annually, Wagoner said. The car will feature rear-wheel drive and an independent rear suspension, and will be available with a manual or automatic transmission and a V-6 or V-8 engine.
GM's decision to go deeper into muscle cars, a vehicle category famous for high performance but poor fuel economy, may have been better-timed.
With gas prices topping $3 per gallon nationwide and Americans snapping up more fuel-efficient vehicles, a new Camaro could find trouble connecting with car buyers.
                            But Peper is not worried.
"I don't think Americans will ever get tired of muscle cars."
Wagoner said the new car will offer the option of increased fuel economy with the additional engine and transmission choices.
GM officials have estimated that a Camaro concept car equipped with a manual transmission and a V-8 engine that goes to four cylinders at highway speeds can get 30 or more miles per gallon of gas.
The Camaro concept is very close in appearance to the production model that will hit the market in 2009, GM design chief Ed Welburn said after the event
Buyers will notice only minor changes, such as a higher roof line, he said, after reporters noticed that the 6-foot, 5-inch Peper had trouble getting out of the low-slung concept.
But Camaro enthusiasts seem eager to buy any new Camaro.
Doug Warren, 53, is the owner of four classic Camaros and president of the West Michigan Camaro Owners Club in Grand Rapids. He drove his 2002 limited edition Camaro to the GM Tech Center for the big announcement.
"We love the new car," he said, standing next to wife Anita. "There is just something about these cars that touches people's inner souls."
