Wow, does that look good. I'm going to have to do that with my 69 Camaro I've been working on.

You're starting with way to high a grit. You should start with 800 or 1000 depending on how rough the surface is. I've never finish sanded with anything higher than 1500 before buffing. That paint's probably real hard now since you waited so long to wet sand and buff so it's going to take a lot longer.

I would never start with 800, even 1000 is too course. If you have about 8 coats of clear and a long straight board to sand with 800, then yes, maybe. I could see a person using 800 (especially with my lack of experience) sanding too long in one spot and then producing a depression ultimtley creating that wavey look, yuck. If I had started with 800, that would require that much more time with the higher grits just to get those 800 scratches out.Originally posted by GETGONE View PostYou're starting with way to high a grit. I had a lot of time on the roof since some of the clear was applied a bit dry therefore producing that rough look. The sides of the car won't nearly take that much time with 1500.WMCC Member (well, I get the newsletter)

your fricken crazy... at my dads body shop the lowest grit they use is a 1500 and most time its 2000. hell they have started to finish up with 2500- 3000 now cuz its so much easier to buff it to look good

Update:
Well I spent over 15hours again on the 73 this weekend. I got all my sanding complete and the compounding done too. All I have to do is use swirl remover and another product to finish the paint, then the normal wax and take care of it! But, I also felt it was a good time to install as much of the trim parts I could since all the sanding and compounding was done. Rear bumper, Tail light gaskets, L&R door mirrors, Rear side tail lights are all installed. It's starting to come together nicely and I can't wait to drive it!
Just for anyone's information, I removed the hood so I can reduce sanding residue and compound dust in the engine compartment, I then used the paper you see to help keep more dust out while sanding and compounding the rest of the body.
Also, what do you think of the "Hurst Equipped" emblem?
