  • 3rd gen differential carriers

I just found out my Trans Am has 3.73 open diff. I have a spare rear end sitting here that has 3.23 posi.

So figuring it would be much easier to swap the posi carrier into the non-posi housing rather than swapping the entire rear ends. I need to know if I will run into any issues doing this?

I'm pretty sure both rear ends are series 3 so I think both carriers are interchangable, but I wanna make sure before I get into it.

by just changing the carrier it would save me all the work of pulling the entire rear end out.

Edit: No I'm not going to keep the 3.23 gears on the posi, I would swap the 3.73's ring gear onto the carrier. And this would save me from having to pull the pinion gear out of the differential.

    Bump

    Nobody knows????

I REALLY need to know for sure soon, cause I gotta get this planned within a week or two, cause I am going to do it at school and this semester is only 6 weeks long and the opportunity will only be available on one certain day, so when it comes I gotta be ready to jump right in and have everything I need.

Not very many people have seen this thread since it's original posting, but I think one of the more technically proficient Third Gen guys will be able to help you out. Just give it till this weekend, and maybe try posting elsewhere too. TGO would be a great place to start.

          Thanks

I went out today and pulled the carrier out of the spare differential. The gears looked good but when I turned the pinion it felt like the pinion bearing was a bit sloppy. The pinion gear didnt look bad either though so maybe the gears are good. I wonder if anyone here would be interested in a used set of 3.23 gears? I'm not going to need them since I'm putting my 3.73 gears on the posi carrier.
