  • Pertronix vs. Crane

I'm getting ready to change over to a non-points system - the two I have settled on are Crane & Pertronix. Any recommendations or opinions on either?

yeah i'm torn - the pertronix has better dwell adjustment and a slightly hotter spark - but the crane has a built in rev limiter

Is there a particular reason you want to go a non-points system?

I attended a seminar this summer on ignition and timing, and the guy giving the seminar was adamant that the non-points system have no advantage over points (assuming your points based distributor is in proper working order).

If you have to go with one, I'd go Pertronix. I was going to switch from points, but after some research on the various systems, decided to keep them solely for the fact that the car runs great with points. Ain't broke, don't fix it.

Another option would be to go HEI.

A couple of good threads on the debate...

thanx for the read - it was interesting to get all those opinions, ideally i would like to go with an HEI unit but am told they won't clear the firewall on the 1st gens. as for the switch I guess it was mainly the lack of maintenance and according to the specs the benefits of a hotter spark.

Right before I sold my '69 SS Camaro I installed a Pro-Form HEI.You are correct about the space .But with a " little " hammering & massaging it fit real nice & couldn't tell that I had to pound the firewall. It made a world of difference from my Mallory Dual Piont.

I for one would be especially interested.

I don't know of anyone first hand who has done it, so I'll be happy to live vicariously through you .

I would also like to know if you need to wait a few moments with the ignition in the "on" position before you can crank it.
