  • Turning to turbo

Well, I decided i'm going to go the Turbo route this coming summer. I really dont know much about them yet, but i plan on doing my homework. I was wondering if someone knew of an online parts list/hot parts list that shows everything needed. I want to get an idea, even a good simple type layout would help. Thanks fella's

Wow seems we got quite a list of us going turbo this winter/next summer.

Unfortunately for you, you have a fourth gen. And thats only unfortunate in that youre lacking in under hood room. I believe if you moved the battery, got rid of the ABS box, things like that, you could squeeze something in there, it's doable.

You will need to decide single or twin, turbo size (check out http://www.turbomustangs.com/turbofaq.php tons of great info in there), hot side plumbing (including header fabrication), downpipe(s), charge pipe(s), incooled?? meth injection??

So many things to think about!

oh yeah, i've found out theres so many things to read about. I plan on going single, and i dont want a rear mounted turbo. And i guess removing the A/C seems like the best bet also.

Yeah, my AC delete heater box is already on the way, I will also be swapping my front accessory setup from the serpentine to the earlier style to tuck everything up closer.

You need to learn about housing A/R's, compressor maps, types of turbos, wastegates, blow off valves, all that crap, and most importantly - avoiding detonation under boost - whether it be by retarding the timing under boost, or using some sort of chemical additive (like meth injection) to cool the charge and add octane, or an intercooler. Or hell, maybe all three.

Best thing to do would be talk to Johnny (superman09) he has a set of twins on the way as we speak and he and I have gone far into researching turbos but I decided to go cheap and spray lol. No need to remove steering box or A/C though as his twin kit even keeps A/C. There are PLENTY of LS1 kits out ther start searching on LS1tech and you will read for months. Get crackin, first thing to do is decide on goals for the car hp wise and 1/4 wise, then work from there.

Yeah, i plan on doing a lot of reading and a lot of researching in the next months. (Thanks for that great site Matt!) And asking a lot of questions...Justin hope ya won't mind, lol.

But i was thinking of going with a T60? I'm shooting for around 450hp (around) on the turbo kit alone? Relocating the battery...i plan on this route, but will removing the A/C also need to be done? I would think if not, its going to cost an arm and a leg more?

              Well on to more reading!

Well i wouldnt remove the a/c. the T60 is good up to 500 hp at the motor i would personally go with a t-66 so you dont use the max out of the t60 there for your turbo will last longer.. There normaly not a big difference in price ( if any).the t-66 with P trim and a .81 a.r.

for a single turbo application, most LS1 guys start with a t-67 as the smallest turbo pretty much, losing the AC is not necessary, i am going to route everything around so i DON'T have to lose AC if i can help it. getting a tubular k-member will help open up some room as well.

like jeff said, check out LS1tech.com for the forced induction section. there are a lot of sponsors on tech that have some nice LS1 kits as well, along with all the reading you can stand!

i lot of people go with the 6.0L truck manifolds and flip them forward and run their hot sides together from there towards the front of the motor. Truck manifold setups generally relocate the alternator as well. since it lies directly in the way on the passanger side.

450hp is a very obtainable goal for an FI car, hell my car is almost there with just Heads/cam.....

Some options for kits out currently that are front mount are...

Ohio Forced Induction - very nice looking kit, retains everything, taking more order in Nov.

TTi Street kit- log manifold kit that retains everything, needs alt relocated but thats all i believe. Kind of restrictive at much over 550 rwhp.

TTi Race kit- tubular header kit, geared for higher HP, comes with an 80mm turbo and A2W IC. Geared for high HP apps.

Turbo-Zone- Truck manifold kit or they sell a tubular header kit as well. Can build you your specs and goals, very affordable. I went with his twin kit. I don't retain AC and have to relocate my alternator but no biggie, only used that air stuff once this whole summer and that was because my mom wanted it on, haha.

                    Stay away from Hi-Flo, PTK

Speed Inc has an awesome twin kit coming out. Also sell a very nice single kit. Their kits are geared more for very high HP applications though so it may be a little over your head with all the fancy do dads and huge turbos with giant DPs, etc.

GMR sells a single and a twin kit. I believe though that they only do in house installs now. Their single is a log manifold and much like the TTi street kit. Their twin kit is a great product but once again, only sell with inhouse install.

I would narrow it down to Turbo-zone, OFI, TTi Street, GMR for your wants. I would suggest at least a 70mm turbo, but why skimp, start with a 76 IMO.

For a single kit your going to be looking at ~5k ish for the kit.. Look into fuel injectors and a pump to get by to start. May want some guages to monitor, boost, elec fuel pressure, a wideband O2 if you feel inclined, trans temp if your auto.

If your an auto, look into around a 3200-3400 stall for street application, with trans cooler and shift kit. Don't expect the 4L60-e to last too long.

If your a manual, you will need a clutch.

For valvetrain, good to have to fight valvefloat but you can get by with stock for ~500 hp. If you want added insurance Valvesprings, pushrods, ported oil pump, timing chain, FI custom grind cam, are all a good idea and the cam will get you come more pwoer a little easier on less boost.

For a twin kit, look at spending a little more. Kit will cost roughly the same, just a little more, its where you need a second turbo and WG and more cold side for the IC that gets you in price.

What are your goals....? 500 rwhp forever? Want to go farther later? plans with use of car? street/strip, etc. These all determine to narrow down the kit for you and size of turbo, etc.

                    Hope this helps.

Well I will say check out turbomustangs.com great place to do some home work. also i have some pics of budget kits you can build at home for low cost. hear is a few pics of thelay i pan to use.

just flip you stock manifolds and you 1/2 way their of the hot side.

Also you will need to up grade your vauvle train. And retune your ECu.

I no a mail order guy that you can mail him your ECU and he can tune for 9psi under $300 cost to you

use a $200 avg. inline fuel pump

                      and 42lbs injectors

and up grade your fuel reg.

you can use a stock crank up to 550rwhp.

you just need to up grade the pistons and rods.

Then after you have some fun.
