Using 1977 VIN Card, many things don' t make sense and it shows the 5 which indicated it's a 1975 vehicle.
        2: Pontiac
        U: Firebird Formula
        87: Coupe 2Dr Hardtop
        S: 425 Cu in 180 Hp 4bbl (Cadillac Engine?)
5: Last digit of Model Year so 1975?
        N: Built in Norwood, Ohio
        561,738: Sequence #

So I pulled the 1975 VIN Card and that matches better.

        1975 VIN Card
        2: Pontiac
        U: Firebird Formula
        87: Coupe 2Dr Hardtop
        S: 400 cu in V8 185Hp 4bbl (For Pontiac)
        5: 1975
        N: Built in Norwood, Ohio
        561,738: Sequence #

Your buddy got a 1975 Firebird, not a 1977. Might have updated sheet metal on it or something. I know 77'-78' was the teardrop headlights (and my favorite style. I used to have a 78'). I can't look up any RPO's to see what options it may have had. You can try to google and see if anyone out there can help. But I didn't have any luck in the GM systems here.

U Code just means it's a Firebird Formula. So it was a stripper Trans Am.

The 78' I had started life as a Firebird Esprit and got upgraded to the Trans-Am sheet metal and 400 4-spd powertrain.

If you don't have the window sticker then your only other option (as far as I know) is looking for the build sheet(s) somewhere in the interior. It was often inside one of the seats or under the carpet.

GM used to put them on top on the gas tank for the c3 Corvette. It's most likely gone though.

Depends on the plant it came from, but yes that was one of the places they hid them. Usually only half legible...at best.

A letter decoding the options (where necessary).
A copy of the dealer order form for that year.

If he really wants to know everything the car was ordered the best bet since its a Pontiac would be Pontiac Historical Services in Sterling Heights. I think its about $60 bucks and it tells you absolutely everything about the car
