    • Wow, that's a ton of nice cars and looks like you guys had awesome weather as well! Thanks for sharing the pics! The wheels look great on the car!

      • Thanks Kyle. The wheels turned out nice, an improvement on what I had, but I'm not 100% thrilled with them. Bruce Hawkins of Hawk's Motorsports was there with a large trailer, parts, and 3 of his new Firehawks. I have already spoken with him about some 17s when the time comes.

        • These still have issues, after all that work??

          • Yeah. They are nice, but not perfect. These will get me through the current new set of 16" tires, then when they age out, I will move on to a set of the repro 17's.

            • Took the car out Saturday night, just to get away from the house for a bit. Ended up down on Woodward. Filled up on the way home. This, and another tank full in Frankenmuth a couple of weeks ago showed no pressure in the tank when removing the cap. So disassembling and cleaning that tank vent valve seems to have done the trick. Car has been running great....better than I have a right to expect. Probably means it's about to blow up.

              • Hey now - if it blows up, that just means it's time to accidentally cam it!

                • Exactly! I have the parts ready. Sadly, I planned on running the rebuilt engine with EBL Flash from Dynamic EFI. And the guy who ran that died unexpectedly just within the last week or so. Without that, I'm not sure what I'll do. There is no easy answer (and even EBL wasn't easy, but it was capable).

It is funny though. After 11 years, I know the way that car runs. I know how it going to respond to different temps, conditions, loads, etc. And I tell you it's running better, idling smoother and slower (idle has always been too fast) and pulling just a little bit better. No one else without similar seat time in the car would notice. But I can tell. And I really didn't do anything to the engine this past winter, aside from add a K&N filter. These cars are thought to be intake and exhaust restricted, with a small throttle body and single snorkel air cleaner on the intake side. So maybe that filter helped just enough to make a difference.

                  • Well that is incredibly unfortunate timing...you may honestly be better off swapping to a Holley Sniper or something along those lines. More expensive and a bit more work, but a whole lot less choked from an intake standpoint, since TBI is essentially still a two-barrel.

It's entirely possible that any little bit helps there, though.

                    • Yes, I've looked at Sniper, FiTech, Aces, MSD/Atomic, etc. And yes, I think the extra CFM would not hurt anything. Sadly, none of them have the ability to control the torque converter clutch. There are aftermarket gadgets (vacuum switches, toggle switches) but none that are reported to work very smoothly. That's the thing I liked about EBL Flash....they took your old computer, and soldered a new board into it that carried their software, and allowed TOTAL control of...everything. Reused all the factory wiring. Very easy in that respect. But the tuning...a little too much for me...I'd love the lazyness of a self tuning/learing system.

The new Sniper 2 does have a few extra input and output lines, but it's not clear to me yet how you "program" those to do what you want them to do, when you want them to do it.

The car is in a weird place technologically. The trans is still stand alone mechanical, with only the TCC being computer controlled. SO while you can by an additional module for Sniper and Sniper 2, that's for the "e" transmission like 4L60E.

To be honest, I love the factory programming. It is so refined, so smooth. It has the drivetrain manners of an old Cadillac, which I love about it as a cruiser. Very comfortable. A smart person would just leave it alone and enjoy it for what it is, but I'm not necessarily a smart person.

Another option is burning PROMs. With Moates gone, and me not desiring a total tune-it-yourself solution, DIY PROMs are not an option. There is an active TGO member who does them, someone just posted the other day on the MIFB facebook page, and there's a company here in Michigan that specializes in Rochester TBI conversions for Jeeps and other hotrods. The TGO member would mean doing a learn, mailing the prom, waiting for it back, doing another learn, etc. for who knows how long. Perhaps the same with the facebook company, which I had never heard of until the other day, and know nothing about. The last option, the local company, only suports certain ECM numbers, mine NOT among them. So I would have to convert to another part # of ECM, which would certainly require some rewiring, but might be the best option that's left.

It is always possible someone will buy the Dynamic EFI (EBL Flash) business, but I'm guess I don't personally consider that likely. The guy was a computer genius, and a one man band running that company as I understand it. Hard to step in and take that over.

                      • Ahhhhh, the goofy age of computer-controlled-but-not transmissions!

Similar to my Camaro which has an even weirder computer-controlled-primary-circuit. It was...a weird time.

How long does a c1988 Pontiac heater core last?
