  • Probably a very stupid question...

As the title says, here is the stupid question:

Is it possible to clear coat over a single stage paint? What will the result look like?

I personally have not. HOWEVER, what little I know about paint chemistry, as long as you stayed in the same paint type you should have an issue. Urethane/Acrylic/etc

I would guess even more you would want to stay in the same paint family, like a particular line of paint. In theory, shouldn't be an issue.

ive never done it before, Micheal or Curt would know best.

I would assume it would be no problem in doing so, but who knows. Isnt the point of a single stage is the clear is mixed into it that gives it the gloss?

I was thinking about it more for a protection standpoint. Already have a nice rock chip in the front bumper...

Yes you can clear over it. The result will be fine.

What are you trying to achieve?

Just extra protection and a deeper shine. I was just curious if it could be done and if anyone had experience with it.

Yes you can do that but it is defeating the purpose. It will chip easier adding more product on top of the current paint.

If you want protection install a bra, 3m clear wrap, or don't drive it.

Single state is fine in certain situations but base clear will net you the best shine and durability.

3m clear wrap might be an option. I will have to look into it.
