  • Strut tower differences between 82-84, and 85-92?????

I have been searching for a reasonably priced strut tower brace, and every time I find one for a 3rd gen, its only for 85-92. I dont know of any difference's between the early 3rd gens and the later's. Does anyone know what the difference would be.

I wonder if the only difference would be engine options???

If its just the engines that make the difference then I should be ok ordering a stb for a TPI 350 from an 89 Formula??

Any info here would be greatlly appreciated.

The reason they list that is because the brace is made for TPI cars and goes right across the top of the engine, which would interfere with a carburated vehicles air cleaner. I think edelbrock makes a 3pt one that will clear a carburated setup...

Part #5227 is the carb/TBI style and #5228 is the TPI style.

I'm not aware of any physical differences in the strut towers over the years. Its possible that they do not say 82-84 because of the way the accessories are set up. Maybe there is something in the way on those motors.

yep most are made to fit stock applications being TBI or TPI hard to find one for an aftermarket stealth ram or a carb with high intake and everything... the tbi one will also fit alot of carb cars wouldnt claer mine because of the taller intake though, just search around there are a few companies that make them... im still in search of a nice one to fit mine, might have to fab up my own

I did find a couple for carb/tbi, but they were also listed as 85 up. I did find one that said 82-92, but the description didnt mention any application requirements such as carbed/tbi/tpi, so I am afraid that its one of them universal, one size fits all crappy ones. Let me see if I can find the link again to that one.

Edit: Heres the link to the one I found that doesnt say what applications it works on:

The price for this one is great, but they give no information on it.

Edelbrock list part #5226 as a 3 point brace for a 89 formula with a 5.7L, but "may require trimming of the hood understucture".

Strut towers are the same as Matt said.

82-84 only had a few funky style injections like cross fire, and carburated after 85 on for the most part the majority seemed to be tbi or tpi... probably the reason... the struts themself didnt change so it would still bolt in you would just have to figure out your clearance

they should make it so it curves around the carb unless you wanna do some hood work, i have one for the mustang im building that curves round back of the aircleaner and bolts right on the tower.
