  • HD Radio? Anyone heard of it?

    Hey Guys,
I was wondering if anyone heard of HD Radio?
I'm planning to get a Stereo for the Chevelle & the IROC, then I heard about this HD Radio.
What stereos are available with this feature?
Let me know, because I'm planning to place an order soon.
    Thanks, Brian

Heard of it. Not sure how many stations around here are broadcasting in it. Most stereo's it's an expensive addon. There was a JVC I believe that had the tuner built in for a pretty decent price. To me HD radio is an expensive way to hear the commercials better! I like my XM radio. No annoying ads! Just good music!

HD radio is just like HDTV. Its just the FCC federal mandate to replace analog with digital by 2009. Just make sure your stereo has a compatible digital tuner and you'll be set. Digital TV is amazing, if HD radio is similiar it will be phenomenal. No static, no bleed over, just crystal clear audio like a CD. You will either receive the station or you wont, there is nothing in between anymore. Most stations are already transmitting in compliance with the mandate but since you don't have a digital tuner in your radio you cannot pick them up.

Stop by Sears sometime and ask them if they have an over the air antenna hooked up to high def. You will be stunned at the quality of the picture.

Just like HD tv, while wonderful quality, there is no practical reason to do it. It's just another way the greedy bureaucrats have concocted to suck more money out of the public by forcing people to go with a HD capable equipment be it TV or Radio. I like that it is available but it really pisses me off that they are forcing us to have to buy more electronics to enjoy a little TV in the evening. Democracy my ass.

God the greedy bastards in Washington piss me off.

I disagree. Anyone can recieve digital with an external digital tuner and their existing TVs. But they wont see High Def. Most people with digital cable and satelitte are already watching digital. But those watching antenna or basic cable are not. You see with a digital TV, not even a HD digital TV, the ATSC Tuner on board allows you to recieve digital signals and also to view any digital subchannels. You know how Fox has a bunch of other channels? Fox Sports, Fox News, Fox Family... Same idea. Each channel transmitted over the airwaves have many subchannels. so the people using antenna will actually pick up 50-60 channels for free! Basic cable user will just get the box. And HD people will have HD. Lot of reasons for it. Improved Bandwith, Improved Veiwing capabilities, Improved Access to broadcasts. You see analog broadcasts are way inneficient. They take up too much space. Also, have you ever been traveling, listening to the radio just for the station you are listening to to fade out on you. That is a thing of the past with digital. I could drive all the way to California and listen to 89X all the way out with no distortion. Very good system.

                  +1 for sat radio.

How can you listen to 89X all the way to California? That would mean people in California would be able to tune into it, and would mean there's like 160 or whatever stations that people could listen to anywhere in the nation... if that's true, then aight, but otherwise it seems like it's stretching it a bit to say you can drive all the way to another state and not have this issue.

Once again while you understand the benefits you don't seem to get the whole point. I am not in the dark ages, I have Satellite TV with Digital quality and I understand how the channels work. I understand that people will be able to buy an external tuner for older TV's and that is exactly my point. It serves no purpose other than to force people to buy more stuff and spend more money to enjoy TV when it should be a choice that each person can make for themselves to upgrade to it.

Actually HD TV has been in the works for at least 15 or more years now. I remember reading about it when it was just in the planning stages. The whole point of it is to reshuffle all the frequences that stuff is currently on to make room for other things. Do you remember all the issues with CBs and the first cell phones causing interference with emergency radio channels? They're trying to straighten out the mess they caused for themselves years ago. HD TV was SUPPOSED to be mandatory about 5 years ago but because to delays in getting the manufacturing process up to speed it was delayed for 5 years.

It shouldn't be mandatory at all. It sucks that they come out with this new technology and it's just "upgrade or die." At the heart of this, it's just another reason for these companies to make more money.

At Work, we pick up stations from Canada, Detroit, Lansing, Toledo, Bowling Green, Chicago, Cleveland, Kzoo. All over the place. Radio would not be much different.

Wade is correct. If you want to blame anything, blame the 9/11 attackers and the Bush Administration. They are setting up the analog networks for Emergency Broadcast Networks. Its all part of the grand scheme to protect this nation and it people from outside threats and domestic dangers.

Also, the companies that are making money off this are having to drop a lot more money to institute a system to abide by federal law. Such an example, all television manufacturers were required to install digital tuners in their TVs by june of last year in all 26" and above. This translates into additional costs for TVs. Some of which people will not even buy!
