Cold Air Intake Suggestions?

Well, I've decided my first mod, to be a Cold Air Intake.

This is my first car, I've always wanted a firebird since I was a wee one, and well I've been getting alot of questions about mods.

I've asked around, got a few opinions (Alot of rants about how I need to switch to a V8 from a V6 ) And well CAI seems like a good first mod, It's fairly simple, since I've helped someone already install it on a previous car (MX6)

And well, I've been doing a few lookups, and i've seen alot of brands.

Does anyone reccomend any specific type/brand of CAI?

Hey this is not a stupid post, it is a good question and something that is a very good first mod.

I personally am a fan of homemade ones. I have a homemade one where I took some 3" exhaust pipe and bent it and made it go into the fender like a aftermarket expensive intake. Then just bought a rubber 90* connector to hook up to the throttle body along with a cone filter from autozone. Total was like $30 to make. Works just like a SLP or other aftermarket CAI. A lot of this kind of setup is for sale on ebay.

The aftermarket ones are good, from all the forums and such I have read, I have heard all good things about the SLP Cold Air intake. The K&N FIPK isn't bad either, but have heard a bunch of good things about the SLP. I think there is a Lingenfelter one two for our cars but not sure. I personally if I was to buy an aftermarket CAI would go with the SLP CAI. Only drawback would be their price tags of around $150-200 for them.

So my recommendation would be a SLP CAI if you want to buy one instead of make one.

See, I would make one, but there would be alot of duct tape, paperclips, and maybe a few words of profanity.

I am afraid if I get a CAI, if I hit some water, will I screw up the engine at all?

Like waterlog the engine?

My friend said they fixed the issue with firebirds, so it shouldn't, but if it is infact possible, is there a way to fix it? Like hook up some sort of sheild on a rainy day? If it's not possible, I'm going to order that SLP CAI, REAL soon.

You won't have any problems with water unless you make the ram air scoop underneath your car. The CAI will be tucked away in your fender wheel well and water won't be a problem. If some drops splash in there somehow though, the filter will stop it.

If you get SLP Cold air kit get the Whisper lid and K&N air filter with it also, will prolly be more noticable gain if you do all 3 at same time. I love that setup in high MPH range.
