  • Fiberglass VS MDF

For making a sub-box that sits in the well of an FBody, whats your preference? How much weight is saved using fiberglass? Is it worth the mess and PITA to build it?

I have a 3/4 MDF box right now and was thinking about glassing a new box.

for odd shapes glass is the way to go, but don't expect a ton of weight savings since it needs to be pretty thick to be a good box (not to mention it should still have a wood base)

Have you seen the prices on CF lately! This CF shortage really blows, prices are sky high if you can even get it!

especially real cf (it requires a vacuum mold to do it correctly otherwise it's just black fiberglass)

I heard about the shortage coming, and I ordered 3 square yards of carbon fiber in advance. Beat the skyrocketing prices.

I work on the svsu race team, our chassis uses a lot of carbon fiber. prices went from 17 a yard to 34 a yard, from last year to this year.

And "real CF" doesn't require a vacuum mold, there are MANY lay up tecniques. I should really take pictures of all my CF work for future stuff, I have done everything except use a full auto-clave.

Yeah, just because it's not vacuum bagged doesn't mean it's not carbon fiber. It's still carbon fiber, regardless of how you use it. Vacuum bagging is just the common technique of carbon fiber. That's like saying plastic is only plastic if it's mold injected.

Exactly right guys, CF is CF no matter how it's formed or cured...but I can see what he was trying to get at.

I am going to try to make an all PlexiGlass Sub Box that looks similar to 97rs4life's box.
