  • Found 78 Camaro RS

    Can anyone help me out.

I was driving by my house and saw the back end of a Camaro RS covered in dust in a garage. I stopped and talked to the owner and asked if he would sell it.
His reply pretty much told me that he had thought about it but wanted to make sure the car was restored and taken care of not just an every day driver.
This car is in good condition,RED, slight rust that is fixable, Rebuilt 350 motor with Approx. 10,000 miles on rebuild, 120,000 on the clock. T-Top (Leak-tops) interior fair.
Seeing that this is an RS what is it worth?
If anyone else is interested let me know. This car is not publicly for sale but could possibly be purchased.
Could be a nice car with some TLC.

That could be a fun little toy.

You don't say if it runs/drives or not.

If it runs and drives, $1000-1500 would probably be a decent deal.

If it doesn't, cut that in half.

Thanks for the reply. He states that it does run but yesterday we just started talking and he said with a battery it would run but has not been started in over 1-2 years.

          T/As had T-tops first in 76.

I think, could be wrong, that factory Ts in Camaros was first offered in '78. I don't think they ever had the Hurst hatches in '76 and '77 and only used the Fisher hatches.

Could be a fairly rare car if they're factory.

One way to tell if they're factory (other than looking for the Fisher logo), is if there is approximately 4-5 inches of continuous roof material between them. The aftermarket ones butted right up to each other with no exposed roof material.

If you can afford it I say do it. Even if you don't keep it long you can see that someone will appreciate it.

Fisher T-Tops supposedly don't leak as much as the Hurst ones. But the Hurst ones had more roof between the T-Tops. If the engine is stock should be factory rated at ~170HP. That's what my 78 w/350 is rated at.

Sounds like it could be a cool ride! Is it the 2 tone red with black hood and roof?
Weather stripping for early T-Tops is VERY expensive. Just ask Camdon. It like $800 for the Hurst and $500 for the Fisher, or something like that.
2nd gen values are sharply on the rise! Currently the fastest rising of all the generations. If you can pick it up cheap?????? Say less than $1500. It would be a great buy and certainly do nothing but go up in value. BUT... it is still just a '78 RS. You should currently be able to buy a VERY nice one for under $10K. You know how much you have invested in the '85. Figure on spending the same to make the '78 that nice. HOWEVER once done and a few years down the road the '78 will likely be worth more than the '85 and your '85 is the nicest I think I've ever seen.

$500 doesn't sound too bad for weatherstripping on a 2nd gen. Weatherstripping for my '78 is $300 and that's for a hardtop.

No, that's $500 just for the T-top weather stripping not the whole kit.
