  • Which Clutch???

Ok so I'm in need of a new clutch. I'm gona be doing it my self but i just need to decided on which one, SPEC Stage II from ftpp.net or CenterForce II
from Lukavicth performance. So im just wondering if anyone has any comments about either brand or if theres another good option

    Thanks Again,
    Mikes

i put the Spec III in my SS....did everything myself....in the end anyways... first i had the clutch put in w/ stock flywheel...the guy never balanced it...told me i needed a new flywheel. so i got their flywheel. still outta balance, cause the trans shop never balanced the two together. my rear end blew a few weeks later so i just ripped everything apart myself. took dial indicator to the flywheel. noticed it wasn't even flat. i could see by the wear in it anyways. sent it back to spec under warranty. what a joke! the took a DA to my flywheel and replaced the clutch puck pads on the clutch. didn't even blanchard grind or balance it at all...they said "i used too much thread lock and that was throwing the balance off" i was like "you have to be kidd'n me im 18 but im not a ****ing IDIOT!" so they sent me back nothing different. i had to send both clutch and flywheel to a machine shop that does motor work for my step-dads racecars. he ground my flywheel FLAT and balanced the clutch and flywheel together. i was extremly pissed off at SPEC because it was like $40 to send it back to them and they just bullshitted their was outta anything with me. basically the service and people at spec are not worth my time! it was a huge hassle and a huge waste of my time and money. but now that i got everything in and working right i was satisfied with the clutch. it took like 1500 miles of city driving with absolutly no powershifting or anything to break it in. now it only chatters a little bit.
so in the end... i would say my vote is still for SPEC...but if/when you do get a clutch. make sure whatever flywheel you put it on is either resurfaced flat....or new...and make sure the two are balanced together from the beginning. but i am happy with how my SPECIII feels. wow that's a huge post but i hope it helps with your decision!

you're welcome hope it helps... but yeah make sure your stuff is balanced...if not it will feel like your dashboard will rattle off! my car vibrated like hell B4 everything was balanced. and if you keep the stock flywheel...make sure they don't resurface it too much. i forget the max amout to "safely" take off. like .040 or something like that.. a 4 is stuck in my mind if i remember correctly??.. double check though. other than that it shouldn't be that bad. i dropped my trans and put it back in by myself with my car only like a foot in the air with jack stands...it was tricky i'll tell you that much. but i did it

yeah i've heard crap like that..the spec3's going out in like 20,000 miles and crap. so far im happy with mine, but like i said i only have 1,500 miles on my car since i put it in. i did some research after the fact .. like a dumb ass... and i found that not too many people had good things to say about spec. but then again my buddy ran a Spec2+ in his 99 formula with a moser 12 bolt 4.10's and a twin intercooled procharger... and he said he never had problems with it and it worked great. he also had a spec in a vortech blown stang he used to have. so i've heard good things from reliable sources about spec. however i have also heard a lot of shit about them. i think SPEC is just a "pot luck" company. either you get a great product and you are happy, or you get a piece of shit from them and hope their building got destroyed by katrina too!!! haha that was bad cause they are based in louisiana somewhere lol..... im kinda stuck in the middle. i'll be able to tell you how good mine is after next summer if im replacing it then, or if it's still going strong!

I would recommend a Mcleod Street Twin if money isn't an option.ln my opinion they make one of the best clutches for your application. Let me know if there is anything we can assist you with. We are not to far from St. Clair Shores.

Ok so with the somments here on and what ive read on other sites I'm gona say SPEC is out of the question. Now I need to get back to Lukovich peformance about a $ for a centerforce II. Now also is there anyothers with anything to say about RAM clutchs b/c this is now an option for me.

VictoryRacingEngines- I've never heard of you guys which supperizes me. Are you guys new? I'll have to give you guys a call when I get home today, I'm at school right now. Now how much aer we talking for a Mcleod Street Twin clutch?

                  Thanks Again,

yea getting your flywheel resurfaced is a must. I will probably go with a street twin next time around, just because im sure there will be a next time around. I can hardly wait to wrestle my tranny again

I have a centerforce dual friction clutch on my '80 camaro. Love it, put so much power to the tranny I took out 2 saginaw 4 speeds (which aren't very stout anyway) with it. I have a muncie now, lol.

If you got the money, this would probably be the way to go, new flywheel and clutch all set to run.

yea I deff will by resurfacing the flywheel my shop teacher knows a guy that will do it for us. Well the Mcleod Street Twin is out of the question plus i realy dont think ineed anything that much. Now i should have prob added this in here, I have a 97' RS and so far just the Y87 Pefromance Package and a flowmaster muffler, so basicaly stock but plan on doing other mods like CAI, cam, chip, ect nothing to big. So I want something thats not gona be too hard on me and has good grip that can handle what i give it.
Im looking into the CenterForce and the RAM clutchs.

                              Thanks again,
