I have a 1993 trans am turbo charged LT1 puttin out round 500 at the motor with 8 psi and it has the stock rear end and transmission... wat would be the best route.. beefing up the stock transmisson and rear end by performing a performance rebuild or purchasing a different set of both?? i like the gear set in the rear end right now however, i need some advice as to which way i go.. at maximum performance it throws out around 700-750 lbs of torque when there is full bost.. Thank you for your time

you should be able to do a performance rebuid on the th 400 but an aftermarket would be ideal i think. that is alot of torque so i don't knowsigpic

That sounds like an awful lot of power for only 8 psi.
But, agree with Travis, the rear is the first thing to change.
And if you still have the stock trans, you don't have a Turbo 400...a TH400 will work, but you only have 3 gears, which will be fine if you're after a race only application.
You're likely into building a 4L60 or something similar.
So, short answer, replace 'em both...lol...Originally posted by Redd8407I WANT NOISE! SPEED! AN ENGINE THAT SHAKES MY INTERNAL ORGANS LIKE THEY GOT PARKINSON'S! this is interesting, i was told with a 93's setup i believe its speed density (no maf) that LT1's dont like boost. do you have pictures? this is a serious modification ive been researching, and id like to pick your brain...
I would Definitly for sure REBUILD that trans with all the upgraded parts.. shift kit, bigger stall, etc. and I would just take it easy on the rear end for now or buy something new for sure99 Grand Prix GT - Winter Ride

if your making 750 rwtq, no way your stock drivetrain is even still there. On 8 psi, your stock tranny and rear will live for a while. My guess is that after numerous pulls and if the trans isnt tuned right it will start to slip after a while. Being an auto i think your rear will live for a while especially if your still on a street tire and dont strictly drag the car. Who tuned the car? I'd suggest driving it and enjoying it for now. At 8 psi i think you are safer than you think with the driveline, just make sure that tune is spot on and you getting no detonation. Drive it and upgrade when shit breaks.... If you need a trans, i think a built 60-e will handle your duty as long as you get the right build in it. For a rear end if that happens to go. a 12 bolt or 9" will both work just fine in your application. Now if your going to forge that motor and up the boost, your in a whole different ball game, need to think about a 4l80-e or th400 trans and a solid 9" rear or Dana rear, along with all the other necessary do-dads that go along with it. Hope this helpssigpic

rely you could use a 9", dana, or 12 bolt. Car craft just did an artical on the three and there was not much of a diffence in power loss or weight, and only a little in strengthsigpic

On on results i've seen over my years of research, in higher HP applications, you WANT a 9" over the 12 bolt. Its a very rare case to see someone break a 9", however i've seen many blown 12 bolts..... look at Larry (1badair). I bet he'll tell you to start right off with the 9". You could get away easier with a 12 bolt in an auto car considering they do not shock the drivetrain like the M6 cars do.sigpic

Like i said, He is wanting the best set up, So for the best set up on my opinion is to use the Moser M-9 WITH there torq arm, and a 4L80 trans, Thats built really nice.. That will be a very nice set up. And very stong.
USE nice boxed or tubular LCA to match.. and a good set of weld in Trinangle SFC...
SHOULD BE A VERY NICE SET UP...
