So I have pretty much everything for my exhaust now, but I want to add a high flow catalytic converter. Are their any you guys would suggest? There are cheap ones on Ebay for like $50, but are they any decent? Also, has anyone ever gutted one? Would you suggest it? Thanks in advance guys!

Just out of curiosity, why would you buy a high flow cat and then gut it?Originally posted by Redd8407I WANT NOISE! SPEED! AN ENGINE THAT SHAKES MY INTERNAL ORGANS LIKE THEY GOT PARKINSON'S! I DONT WANT AN ENGINE THAT IS PARTIALLY POWERED BY MY LAPTOP BATTERY!Originally posted by Z28ISGR8WHY THE F*CK IS THERE A GOAT ON A FERRARI?Originally posted by DarrenI think it is because I take it in and out all the time, the rubber has just stretched out, especially at the bottom where it is really thin. It annoys me more then anything.

I think you are confused ben, high flow cats are just that, high flow cats. I put a high flow bullet cat on my car when i put on the loudmouth, pretty sure there is next to nothing to that cat anyway, and it would be downright stupid to think of gutting something that has that little restriction. you would have to see a high flow cat to understand but it would definately be pointless to gut lol.-Derek-

I wasted $160 on cats... learned my lesson the hard way, just go with straight pipes
Sounds much better anyway.

We sell a few different brands of high flow cats at my work and everyone seems to love the Magnaflow cats. I know when I go to redo my exhaust it's getting Magnaflow for sure. This SLP setup I have no is killing me!2005 Yamaha R6

what do you have? I have an SLP 2OTL and i want to get rid of it too... just doesnt sound as good with the headers as it did before. My next setup is going to be one or more hooker aerochambers.Originally posted by ITSSLOW View PostWe sell a few different brands of high flow cats at my work and everyone seems to love the Magnaflow cats. I've got the SLP LoudmouthII setup with single 3 1/2" tips on each side. Patrick (LS1formulation) said I could have his 3 1/2" resonator tips that he had on his car. Said they really quieted it down and even with his headers was a lot quieter than no headers/std SLP tips.Originally posted by JoeliusZ28 View Postwhat do you have? Patrick went to Hookers also. He has 2 of them with dumps and a set of (forgot the brand) longtubes. His car sounds amazing but alot has to do with that TR cam and heads....2005 Yamaha R6

yea for sure. Ive just yet to hear an aerochamber i havent liked... my truck has dual 2-1/4s and it sounds perfect. Quiet at idle, and a perfect hollow sound that doesnt drone under throttle.
ill stop threadjacking now, sorry ben!-Joel

yea def. dont do the straightpipe on a v6 it will sound like you crapping after eating mexican food!
Id go with a catco or magnaflow..but i heard catco sometimes throws the SES light and not so much magnaflow
I plan on getting me amagnaflow one very soon because my cat sucks and needs to be replaced!

Sorry guys, I phrased it wrong. I was asking if anyone had any expirience with hi-flow cats.
Then I asked about another alternative which is gutting the stock cat. But I think that method is legally questionable.
So what is the story with straight pipes? What are the benefits / disadvantages of it?

Gutting your stock one would be no different that running a straight pipe in it's place. Illegal? Technically I think so, but we don't have emissions testing anyway. I personally wouldn't waste the time and money on a high flow cat or a straight pipe on the v6, just gut the stock one and be done with it.Originally posted by phoenix_rising View PostSorry guys, I phrased it wrong. dont gut your stock cat, you should be able to get 100 dollars out of it to a scrap yard for the platinum in it, then you can buy a high flow cat for like 40 bucks and put it in its place if you desire, trust me do NOT go straightpipes it wont sound good, my car was practically 3 inch straightpipes when i installed the loudmouth one with a 3inch bullet cat (basically no restriction) and it was downright obnoxious at anything over an idle, i put a twister muffler in its place and it still doesnt sound as good as I would want, guess ill have to wait for cam and headers. putting in an hpipe and two borla bullet mufflers dumped before the axle has resulted in the best sound for a v6 that ive heard to date, but that would take quite a bit of fabrication. i still may do that someday, not sure yet.-Derek-

AVOID ebay carsound/magnaflow cats, i've gone through two, the first one rattled and failed after a year. the second one started rattling after 12 days. it works but is the most embarassing noise ever. needless to say im ripping it off and straight piping. not worth my money spending 200 or 300 on a cat.
i'd like video proof of no cats sounding shitty.. everyone ive talked to so far hasn't complained.Last edited by 00firebird; February 11th, 2008, 07:33 PM.2000 Firebird A4 black hardtop
