  • 350 motor...need some help.

ok....a buddys got a 350 2 bolt motor for sale. hes not sure on the year but he says its an older block. (has the fuel pump on the side of the block unlike the 350 his my 91 silverado) it had the machine work done to bored it .040 over and has never been ran. He planned on building this motor for my truck, after he got done doing the straight axle conversion to it. But his plans have changed.

The machine work was done by circle auto in midland. It has almost eveything to put this motor together except lifters, pushrods, cam, and maybe the bearings (he cant remember if he has those or not). he didn't take the heads or crank in to get them checked because he wasnt planning on putting the stock parts back in the motor.

My questions are....will this work in my 87?
Then, can I use my cam & intake set up that I just bought a couple years ago? (I'm thinking 305 - 350....should be able to swap)

Do I need to know what year block this is before I go any farther?
I can get it for $200.00 if I wanted, so I thought it was a pretty good deal.

    Please let me know,
    Thanks
    Todd

I wasnt sure if the year made a difference. I know my intake, the bolt holes are sloted to fit vortech heads.
I know it will drop right in.....but will it work with my cam and all my TPI stuff?
Can I make it a roller cam if it was a hydraulic?

Yeah, you could make it a roller cam setup. Need to run guideplates probably.

I would find out what year it is. Also, if he hasn't had any work done to the rotating assembly you should. So factor in some more money for that if you want it done right, the rods and crank should at least be resurfaced and checked for cracks.

So does this have Vortec heads? What are the cam specs? I'm sure it will run with the 305 spec stuff but it may be limiting the motor. More than likely you will be better off with a cam more suited for a 350 and the heads you run. As for the TPI, I'm not sure, somebody else might chime in that knows more. I would think at a minimum it would need to be reprogrammed at least.

hes going to try to get me the year asap.

but it comes with a crank, heads, rods, pistons, oil pan, fuel pump and i think that is it.

So I asked him if they were the .040 new pistons.

Fuel pump....I can buy a block off plate.
Stock 350 crank, rods, and heads.

.....O, all my intake stuff and cam will fit a 350. Thats why I spent the $$. knowijg I could swap it over. I just dont know what year blocks I can swap it all too.

Should all swap over on Gen I or II motors, except for Vortec heads which require a specific intake. Only real big difference between a Gen I (55-85) motor and a Gen II (86 up to the Gen III in 98 for the fbody) is the one piece rear main seal. As long as both sets of heads are non-Vortec then yes, everything should swap over.

I have a nice deep oil pan for a 2 piece rear main block if you interested.

And yes your stuff should work. But you may want to look into a different cam as OT sugjected.

Your computer will need to be retuned as was already said also.
